Virtual Simulation :
An Educator’s Toolkit

CASN supported the development of a new open access etextbook, developed as a resource to help educators and simulationists use virtual simulations with learners in all educational settings. It is designed to highlight key concepts related to educator preparation, prebrief, enactment, debrief and evaluation stages required for providing an effective virtual simulation learning experience. The foundational information in this etextbook will benefit any educator who is using virtual simulation in a course, lab, clinical setting or to augment practice.

Creating a Nursing Peer Mentorship Program:
Benefits to Students’ Health and Wellbeing
A collaborative initiative between faculty and students

Date: Wednesday, May 11, 2022
Time: 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. EDT

As part of National Nursing Week, the CASN Mental Health Nurse Educator Interest Group would like to invite you to join their upcoming webinar. During this one-hour webinar, participants will hear from students and faculty who created nursing peer mentorship programs (NPMP). Students in Douglas College’s BSN Program in Coquitlam, BC will explain how their NPMP was started in 2010, and how it has supported students’ wellbeing over the last decade. Students from the Ingram School of Nursing, McGill University in Montreal will describe how their program generates a sense of belonging and connection amongst the undergraduate and graduate student body. The focus will be on sharing experiences of creating these NPMPs so that interested participants can use the information to implement a similar program at their institutions. Ce webinaire est offert en anglais seulement. **The views and opinions expressed by the members of the Nurse Educators Interest Groups (CASN) do not necessarily reflect the views of CASN. Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s (CAMH)
new Vaping Cessation Guidance Resource

In response to the growing prevalence of e-cigarette use, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s (CAMH) Nicotine Dependence Service has developed an evidence-informed clinical guidance resource for healthcare providers to help support adults and youth (ages 15-24) who want to quit vaping. This resource was developed in collaboration with a group of international experts in the field of tobacco and vaping as well as people with lived/living experience of e-cigarette use.

The recommendations listed in this resource aim to provide general guidance to help adults, youth, people who are pregnant, breastfeeding and/or chestfeeding and people with mental illness and/or substance use issues interested in quitting vaping.

The Vaping Cessation Guidance Resource and List of Assessment Tools can be accessed through the Nicotine Dependence Service website, found here: https://www.nicotinedependenceclinic.com/en/electronic-nicotine-delivery-systems-(ends).

A research team at RRC Polytech is conducting a study project on the Validation of the Individual and Collective Self-Efficacy Scale for the Teaching of Writing in a nursing faculty sample. To support the project, study staff is inviting nursing faculty to participate in a voluntary 10-minute anonymous online survey to help study staff understand how nurse educators would self-rate their abilities to teach writing skills to nursing students.

To learn more about the study and complete the survey, please go to the following link: https://rrcir.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eIMbwHiDeWFFCuh

If you have any questions about this survey, or in the future, you would like to hear more about the findings, please feel free to contact Kim Mitchell at kmmitchell@rrc.ca
Canadian Nursing and Genomics

In early 2020 the Canadian Nursing and Genomics (CNG) steering group (in partnership with Athabasca University, Memorial University, and Ontario Genomics) was formed to help nurses respond to advances in genomics and the emergence of precision health. The CNG aims to support Canadian nurses to develop genomic literacy and accelerate the integration of genomics into nursing practice.

Below are a series of whiteboard videos developed by the Canadian Nursing and Genomics Steering committee.

The first video (1:15) covers the importance of genomics to patients and thus nurses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yYfMNE39JE&t=13s

The second video (1:30) explains the engagement framework and the six priorities for action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGqkeAeg0ZM&t=2s

This third video (1:28) describes nursing intraprofessional collaboration across the five domains of practice as a strategy to support nurses to integrate genomics into practice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV7ggPtDNs4
