OPEN LETTER: Adding Anti-Racism to the Canada Health Act: The time is now

On September 28, 2020, Joyce Echaquan, a 37-year old Atikamekw woman from Manawan, died in the Centre hospitalier de Lanaudiere in Joliette, Quebec. The livestreamed video recorded before her death show at least 2 hospital employees hurling racist, hateful insults at her. Joyce died shortly after recording the video. She had also been restrained to her hospital bed.

This was not the first racist incident at the hospital that Joyce had experienced in her short life. Her death, and the growing pandemic of anti-Indigenous racism in Canada has sparked national protests, calling for reforms and giving urgency to the anti-racist movement in our country.

We must call on the federal government to adopt anti-racism as a sixth pillar of the Canada Health Act, prohibiting discrimination based on race and affording everyone the right to the equal protection and benefit of the law.

We ask that you consider signing this open letter of support. Please sign and share with your own networks in the spirit of solidarity.

It is time to act. We need your support.

International Journal of Nursing Student Scholarship (IJNSS)

Attention Nursing Faculty and their undergraduate and graduate students:

Please consider submitting an article to the peer reviewed journal called:
International Journal of Nursing Student Scholarship: http://ijnss.journalhosting.ucalgary.ca

The International Journal of Nursing Student Scholarship (IJNSS) was created to provide the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate nursing students to publish their scholarly papers that have been completed as course assignments. Please invite your course professor(s) to be included as one of the authors, and who thus would provide editorial assistance for modifications of the final version of the manuscript.

Submissions will also be accepted from students in related health disciplines if they have completed course work that is applicable to the discipline and profession of nursing in particular or to health and human services in general. The aim is to facilitate interprofessional / collaborative learning, foster an interest in research and its dissemination, and promote innovations in health care practice.

Please invite your course professor, faculty advisor, or thesis supervisor to be a joint author with you. See info re: submission on the University of Calgary website: http://ijnss.journalhosting.ucalgary.ca/
Nurses poised to play key role in advancing precision care through genetics and genomics

A recent article was published in the Canadian Nurse about how nurses in the five domains of practice can engage in genomics. Read the full article here.

There's also an opportunity to delve deep into the fascinating world of genetics and genomics by attending the upcoming workshop, Advancing Nursing Practice in the Genomic Era: A Canadian Initiative. This virtual event will be of interest to nurses from all domains of practice. Expert speakers will discuss the implications of genomics to nursing practice, including parenting and child development, cancer screening and treatment, and cardiovascular risk management. Strategies to engage nursing leadership and nursing education will also be reviewed. The workshop is free and will take place on November 25, 2020, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. ETLearn more about the program and register today!
Nursing The Future Initiative

The Canadian Nurses Foundation (CNF) and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) have come together to create a web-based platform focused on new graduate transition. This project is led by Dr. Judy Duchscher, an associate professor at Thompson Rivers University School of Nursing and a member of the CASN Board of Directors.

Nursing The Future is an online platform that gives new nurses a place where they can connect socially with experienced nurses and seek information that will help support their transition to practice. This is critical support for the upcoming cohorts of graduates entering practice during an especially challenging time in health care.

Nurse educators play a key role in building Nursing the Future by joining the network as a new graduate supporter and sharing educational advances and research that supports new graduate transition. Educators are asked to encourage senior students to sign up now to participate.
e-Prescribing - new interdisciplinary module now available for nurse practitioner students on AFPC e-Resource

The Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada (AFPC) is pleased to launch a new 12-unit, interdisciplinary e‑Prescribing module in our eLearnHCP e-Resource (free to access on our Moodle LMS). It is interactive and case-based, and has been designed for use in nurse practitioner, medical, pharmacy, pharmacy technician and dental programs. It was peer-reviewed by three nurse practitioner faculty members, as well as faculty from the other disciplines.
We expect this will be a very timely resource given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on providing virtual patient care and the need for online resources – in particular for courses where practice skills, therapeutics, medication management and/or patient safety are taught. We will be translating it into French for the winter term. This project is funded by Canada Health Infoway (a not-for-profit federal agency).

The attached brochure provides more details – you can see two sample units here: 2: Current State – Prescribing and 7: Clinical CommunicationThe direct link to the e-prescribing module is: https://elearnhcp.ca/course/view.php?id=125 (you’ll need to register on the open-access AFPC e-Resource with a user name and password).
