Summer 2022 Round-up!

September 1, 2022

Dear CAT Community and Friends,

Before we launch our 48th fall semester, fully in-person once again, we'd like to share a brief look back at our summer activities.

After our school-year programs wrapped up in June, Sound Thinking NYC and CAT Youth Theatre provided (IRL) summer programming for NYC middle and high school students through July and August! Scroll down for a brief update from both programs.

From all of us at CAT, we hope you have had opportunities to rest and play this summer, and we can't wait to see you in the fall!

Warmly,

Jeanne Houck and the Creative Arts Team

Congratulations to the CAT educators, teaching artists, partners and Sound Thinkers who participated in the Sound Thinking NYC (STNYC) Summer Intensive. STNYC is a program of CAT and the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, created to address gender and racial equity in the music industry through the exploration of career pathways.

Two cohorts of students graduated the three-week Summer Intensive in July and August, during which they built music production skills, met music industry leaders, created community, and participated in CAT workshops on leadership and life skills.

Highlights included field trips to Main Drag Music and the Louis Armstrong House Museum, and full days of learning and music creation at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Brooklyn College.

CAT Youth Theatre - JYT Summer Project

JYT Summer Ensemble 2022

This year the CAT Junior Youth Theatre returned for our first in-person summer project since 2019!

The week-long intensive was an opportunity for interested middle schoolers to come and check out the JYT before signing up for the fall. An ensemble of 22 young people met for the first time on Monday morning, August 15th, and in just a few days created the original play BOXED! The show explored the role that literal and metaphorical boxes play in our lives, and was performed for an audience of about 50 people, including family, friends, YT Alumni and CAT staff on Friday evening, August 19th. It was an exciting launch to our year!

We are looking forward to kicking off our fall semester on Tuesday September 13th for high-schoolers and Wednesday September 14th for those in middle-school.
