CAWP Senior Scholar Honored

CAWP senior scholar Susan Carroll was awarded the Lifetime Contribution to Political Studies Award by the Political Studies Association, the British scholarly organization for political science. The program for the event cites the statement of the judges who selected her: "There will be few UK gender and politics scholars who have not benefited from the pioneering work on women and US politics written by Sue Carroll. Her advising and mentoring of junior scholars is one of her most important legacies that has also led to increased numbers of gender and politics scholars." Carroll, who is also professor of political science at Rutgers, delivered the 2014 Annual Lecture of the Political Studies Association at the London School of Economics on November 24; you can listen to her lecture, entitled "More Women Can Run: Why Women Remain Underrepresented in Politics."

Teach a Girl to Lead Ally of the Month

The goal is simple, but daunting: to change the face of leadership and the way young people think about leaders.  Our Ally of the Month, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., State of New Jersey is collaborating with CAWP for the first time as part of our Teach a Girl to Lead (TAG) initiative. Building on the Zeta's tradition of teaching African American girls about leadership, the two organizations are currently seeking support to develop activities that will  make women's political leadership more visible and inspire young Black women to follow in the footsteps of history-making women who have paved the way.

With a gift of $100, we'll send a personalized letter to a special girl in your life.

he more things change...

The Hill reports that newly appointed House committee chairs are all male, leaving just one committee chaired by a woman: the House Administration Committee (which manages day-to-day operations of the House, or, if you will, Housekeeping), which will continue to be chaired by Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI).

The word from two women who ran

NJ Assemblywomen Holly Schepisi and Nancy Pinkin, honored as Outstanding Women in Government by the NJ League of Municipalities, talk about women serving in public office -- and mention the value of Ready to Run -- in the course of their conversation with NJTV's Mary Alice Williams.
