Dear Colleagues,
It is unbearable that we are releasing another statement in reaction to the killing of another young Black man. However, we feel that being silent is not an option- especially when those we represent serve the communities being bombarded and traumatized by these events.
Tyre Nichols was a son, a father, and a Sacramento native. Reading about and watching the brutal beating of Tyre has caused immense pain in Sacramento and across the country. We have a problem in America. There is no question that this racial pandemic is rooted in systematic discrimination and oppression. Further, the psychological impact of discrimination and racial trauma has long-lasting consequences.
We must once again ask ourselves and our elected leaders to engage in serious reflection about how to reform a system that has taken too many young Black lives. We must use our collective platform to help steer the societal conversation toward compassion, selflessness, and action.
CBHA's thoughts and condolences are with Tyre Nichols, his family, and his community. We will continue to work with our colleagues, legislators, and the public to lead dialogue about how to combat discrimination and oppression that continues to impact this country.
In Service,
