Book Club & Discussion

Thursday, January 12th at 7:00 pm

Beautifully and simply told by their son, National Public Radio commentator Martin Goldsmith, The Inextinguishable Symphony takes us from the cafés of Frankfurt, where Rosemarie and Günther fell in love, to the concert halls that offered solace and hope for the beleaguered Jews, to the United States, where the two made a new life for themselves that would nevertheless remain shadowed by the fate of their families. Along with the fate of Günther and Rosemarie's families, this rare memoir also illuminates the Kulturbund and the lives of other fascinating figures associated with it, including Kubu director Kurt Singer—a man so committed to the organization that he objected to his artists' plans for flight, fearing that his productions would suffer. The Kubu, which included some of the most prominent artists of the day and young performers who would gain international fame after the war, became the sole source of culture and entertainment for Germany's Jews.

We have a "special multi-media/concert event"
scheduled in conjunction with Book Club.

Many times during the year, members and friends tell us that they would like to contribute something to our congregation in honor or memory of a loved one or mark a special occasion. We are often asked what would enhance one of our programs and services. Sometimes our operating budget alone cannot provide for all of our wishes and needs, large and small.
The following list offers some suggestions, but don't hesitate to suggest additional creative ways to enhance our congregation and community. Wish List contributors will be recognized in the weekly e-newsletter and the Chadashot quarterly bulletin.
Mishpacha Project
We are accepting grant applications on our website!

Congregation Beth Israel is committed to the core Jewish value of building Mishpacha, with recognition of those families who are struggling with infertility. We recognize those who are struggling with infertility and the high cost of many procedures by offering fertility assistance grants to enable members to achieve their dream of building a family through advanced fertility treatments such as intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization. Grants are available to non-member applicants.

Phoenix Sings Chanukah Highlights
This past Saturday night, a sold-out crowd gathered at the Arizona Jewish Historical Society for a night of big Jewish musical fun during the 2nd Phoenix Sings Chanukah Sing-a-long. The event, produced by our own Cantor, Seth Ettinger, featured the cantors and soloists from Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation Or Tzion, Temple Kol Ami, and Temple Solel, our newly combined Shir Joy/Sunshine Singer choir and accompanied by an instrumental jazz ensemble led by Jackie Huber. The concert was the first-ever cantorial concert held at the Arizona Jewish Historical Society and was a fundraiser for the camp scholarship fund through the Center for Jewish Philanthropy. Phoenix Sings was graciously underwritten in part by long-time CBI members Andrea and Jerry Lewkowitz. The show featured classics from the Chanukah Songbook and a show-stopping rendition of "The Latke Song" performed by CBI's young Jewish star, Kayla Treviño. For those unable to join, please enjoy these photos from the event and mark your calendars for the 3rd Phoenix Sings Chanukah Sing-a-long on Saturday night, December 2nd, 2023!

Winter Journey and the
Inextinguishable Symphony
Sunday, January 22nd, 2023, 6 PM

MusicaNova Orchestra and ASU's Center for Jewish Studies present one man's story of finding hope and love in an all-Jewish orchestra as Nazi oppression accelerated in 1930s Germany.

The evening begins with the movie Winter Journey, based on classical radio host Martin Goldsmith's book, The Inextinguishable
Symphony, followed by a Q&A with Mr. Goldsmith. The orchestra performs the final piece the Jewish orchestra rehearsed: an
ironic slap at their oppressors, Nielsen's Fourth Symphony powerfully proclaims that "music is life, and like life, inextinguishable."

Local choirs join the orchestra for the finale, Sibelius' magnificent Finlandia, and its soaring statement against tyranny.
