Rockwell Collins is boosting its presence in the VIP jet arena, announcing an agreement today to provide Switzerland-based Comlux with a comprehensive product portfolio, including avionics, cabin management, content and entertainment options, seating, lighting and galley products, as well as ARINC connectivity and flight services.
Engineering work on the first two aircraft awarded under the five-year agreement is now underway. Product offerings from the full portfolio were selected for a Boeing business jet (BBJ) retrofit and the first BBJ MAX being delivered. Work will be completed at Comlux's U.S. base in Indianapolis, Indiana.
"Through our agreement and exclusive access to Rockwell Collins' extensive product portfolio, we can perform optimum completion cycles and operational balance without compromising the design and level of elegance of our VIP cabins," said Scott Meyer, CEO of Comlux Completion in a release. "We are able to provide cost-efficient solutions in terms of cabin technology, warranty and spares, and we ensure our customers enjoy the best VIP cabin experience over the entire life cycle of their aircraft, not only the completion."
In return, Rockwell Collins will have the opportunity to provide solutions for all Comlux completions and retrofit projects, as well as access to their charter fleet to validate design, obtain crew/passenger feedback and certify new products.
"This arrangement provides some incredible new possibilities for the customers served by Rockwell Collins because of the breadth and depth of cockpit to cabin solutions available. It's the first VIP offering of this magnitude for our company," said Scott Gunnufson, vice president of Commercial Systems Business Development, Sales & Marketing for Rockwell Collins. "Comlux VIP customers will be among the first to benefit from our comprehensive solutions that feature leading edge comfort, entertainment and connectivity solutions."
Comlux Completion is approved to equip and maintain Airbus corporate jets, Boeing business jets, Bombardier business aircraft and Sukhoi business jets.

Corridor MPO seeks input on federal transportation projects
To help it prioritize area transportation projects, the Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will host an open house for the public to review and comment on the draft Transportation Improvement Program
on May 31
from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at NewBo City Market
in Cedar Rapids.
"It's crucial for the public to know how and where MPO transportation funds are being spent [in the region]," said Brandon Whyte, multimodal transportation planner at the Corridor MPO, in a release. "Ultimately, it's taxpayers who provide the funding to these transit, trail and road construction projects."
The MPO has several million dollars available to their member jurisdictions to spend on construction projects in the Cedar Rapids region. $2.8 million is available to spend on road projects, $1.95 million for trail projects and $1.1 million for transit projects.
"We have a lot of great projects seeking funds this year. We want to know what's important to the public and why," Mr. Whyte added.
This year's Transportation Improvement Program will provide funding to regional transportation projects between 2019-2022. The final projects selected into the TIP will receive federal funding through Surface Transportation Block Grants and/or the Transportation Alternatives Program.
There will be no formal presentation at the May 31 review event, so community members are welcome to come and go as they please during the scheduled timeframe.

Iowa Women's Foundation tackles state child care barrier

During a statewide tour on the heels of the
2016
She Matters report
release, the Iowa Women's Foundation identified child care as perhaps the most pressing barrier to the economic self-sufficiency of Iowa women. Now, the Des Moines Business Record reports the group plans to take to the road this summer to address the issue and give individuals throughout Iowa a chance to play a role in identifying solutions.
In 2016, IWF visited 18 communities on its tour of the state to discuss
the results of the She Matters report
. Each visit allowed mothers, nonprofits, political representatives, business leaders and others to share challenges they faced. The results: Nine of the 18 communities identified child care as the most urgent barrier to women achieving economic self-sufficiency.
According to IWF's website
, the challenges surrounding child care are layered:
- More everyday child care options are needed for working mothers and mothers who work nontraditional hours, including early morning and overnight shifts.
- Child care needs to be more accessible to all Iowans, including those who live and work in underserved rural areas.
- Child care should be more affordable, while still ensuring that providers earn a fair and livable wage.
To better understand the child care barrier and how it may be addressed, IWF teamed up with partner organizations to form the Building Community Child Care Solutions collaborative. The collaboration aims to help communities across Iowa explore innovative ways to exchange ideas and promote child care investments that support the healthy development of children, as well as a competitive business environment.
Over the course of the summer, representatives of the collaboration plan to travel throughout the state to talk to child care providers, nonprofits, businesses and working moms. The goal is to discuss the issue and explore possible solutions. Participants also will receive a "tool kit" outlining how businesses and organizations can partner to plan and implement solutions, including new and expanded
child care centers, encouraging businesses to explore offering in-house care to workers and supporting before- and after-school programming.
Stops are planned throughout June in Lee County, Mason City, Sioux City, Ida County, Storm Lake and Jefferson. More dates are available on
IWF's website

An AMBER Alert was issued Tuesday morning for 4-month-old Rashaun Graves Jr. out of Waterloo. Rashaun is described as a black male weighing only 12 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen with no shirt, a diaper and no shoes. He also has large dimple on his chin. The alert was issued at 9:29 a.m. Tuesday and lists the abductor as Sarah Nagy Brown, 28. She's described as 5'1", 150 pounds with red blonde hair and blue eyes. Ms. Brown was last seen in blue sports bra and black pants, and is driving a gray Nissan Sentra four-door car.
Every year the Solon Fire Department is surprised by the number of people who come out to their annual pancake breakfast. "It's kind of like a big family reunion," said Solon resident John McFarland. Guests pay for a full plate of food made by firefighters from both the Solon department and the neighboring Ely department. The money goes toward getting the Solon team better equipment. This year, a special donation was taken for something different: a new fire station. "We're a busy operation. Our operation is growing. We're getting busier and in our current building, we're just out of space," explained Greg Morris, the chairperson for the annual breakfast. The $4.8 million dollar project will make it the town's second station. The plan has been in the making for several months. "We don't have any place to build downtown so we purchased some land on the south side of Solon," Solon Fire Department Chief Bob Siddell said. The future station will have several offices, both a small and large meeting room, a training room, and a living area and kitchen. The goal with the additional station is to service the people of Solon more efficiently, as well as provide its volunteer team with a more comfortable area.
