Mercy Iowa City and UnityPoint Health-Cedar Rapids have signed a letter of intent that would allow them to provide health care services to the area through a new relationship.

While details of the proposed relationship remain to be determined, the goal is to enhance operational efficiency and clinical quality for patients and employees in the area.

"Bringing our two organizations together will improve our value-based care and care coordination capabilities," Mike Heinrich, interim president and CEO and Executive Vice President and CFO, Mercy Iowa City, stated in a press release. "UnityPoint Health-Cedar Rapids understands how important it is for Mercy to retain its identity as a Catholic hospital and we are excited to have the support of the Sisters of Mercy and the Davenport Diocese. UnityPoint Health is an outstanding organization and this new relationship will improve our ability to serve the residents of southeast Iowa."

Ted Townsend, president and CEO of UnityPoint Health-Cedar Rapids, also welcomes the partnership.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to bring Mercy Iowa City into the UnityPoint Health family and have a great deal of respect for the long tradition of care they have in the community," he stated. "As the health care industry continues to evolve and change, it is increasingly important for organizations and systems to collaborate and partner in order to continue to provide quality, affordable health care."

Formal discussions will start immediately. All parties, including the Roman Catholic Diocese of Davenport, will work to complete due diligence and receive the appropriate approvals from their respective governing boards and regulatory bodies. During due diligence, representatives will learn more about the other organization and work closely to explore options. The agreement will preserve a key role for the local board in the leadership and governance of Mercy Iowa City.

"The Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community support the proposed relationship between Mercy Iowa City and Unity Point Health-Cedar Rapids and are grateful that the hospital will be able to retain its Catholic identity through the Davenport Diocese," Sister Laura Reicks,  president of the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community, stated in a press release. "Although understandably we are disappointed that the hospital will no longer be sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, this affiliation will ensure that Catholic health care will be available to the Iowa City area for many years to come."
Cedar Rapids and Mount Mercy University will host the 2018 and 2020 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men's & Women's Cross Country National Championships at Seminole Valley Cross Country Course. Approximately 320 male and 320 female runners, along with 1,500 fans will attend the events, generating more than $500,000 in visitor spending each year.

Hosting the championship events also means that that pre-meets will be scheduled in 2018 and 2020, offering teams the opportunity to experience the Seminole Valley Cross Country Course one month prior to the November championship race. Each of these pre-meets will bring in an estimated $100,000 in visitor spending.

"Hosting these national championships is a big win for Cedar Rapids," Aaron McCreight, GO Cedar Rapids president and CEO, stated in a press release. "The Seminole Valley Cross Country Course is a great example of how collaborating to enhance community facilities can pay great dividends."

The process to win the NAIA Men's & Women's Cross Country National Championships began seven years ago with a meeting between GO Cedar Rapids, the City of Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department and Mount Mercy University's Athletic Department. The lack of a championship level course in the area led to the creation of the Seminole Valley Cross Country Course by the Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department with fundraising assistance from GO Cedar Rapids and Mount Mercy University.

In 2015, Mount Mercy University hosted the first collegiate cross country event, the Seminole Valley Stampede, on the course. In June 2016, the successful bid to host the 2018 and 2020 National Championships was submitted.

"This is an opportunity we've been looking forward to for several years," Laurie Haman, Mount Mercy University president, stated in a press release. "It will allow us to showcase two very exciting things -- the history and growth of Mount Mercy University and the work that went into developing our home cross country course."

When John Chadima of Marion decided in 2013 to go into business after a career in university athletics administration, he faced a vast array of options.

They ranged from starting his own business to buying into a franchise, or even taking on a role in a locksmith business his brother and his wife had owned before his death. He was open to many of them, and took a kind of personal sabbatical in Colorado to consider the decision.

"As things evolved here, the franchise route was the way I wanted to go - I think mainly because of my lack of experience running a business," Mr. Chadima said. "You have that safety net of corporate oversight."

He signed up with a franchise matching service, which spent a few hours interviewing him on the phone before delivering its recommendation that he consider franchises in home health care, fitness, frozen yogurt or printing. He ultimately took the advice of a trusted friend, former NFL tackle Don Davey, one of Firehouse Subs' largest franchisees, and traveled to the chain's home office in Jacksonville, Florida for  a day of meetings.

The day ended with a 20-minute meeting with the two brothers who started Firehouse Subs, Chris and Robin Sorensen.

Story1Linn Area Credit Union receives top national ranking

Linn Area Credit Union has been recognized with a No. 1 national ranking from Callahan & Associates, an independent research firm specializing in the credit union industry.

The top ranking was for the Return of the Member (ROM) scoring system. The ROM metric considers three core credit union functions: savings, lending and product usage. The calculation indicates how well a credit union serves its members and the impact it has on the community. Credit unions are divided into groups by asset range.

"We're so proud and thrilled to be No. 1 in the nation when it comes to returning value to our members," Jenny Lorenz, president and CEO of Linn Area Credit Union, stated in a press release. "Linn Area's mission is to help people accomplish their financial goals, and we do everything we can, every day, to make sure our members' needs are met."

Linn Area Credit Union was the only Iowa credit union in its asset range ranked in the top 10.

Volunteers filed into Zion Lutheran at 310 N. Johnson St. in Iowa City on Monday to fill an empty space with cots and blankets, a much-needed escape from the cold for those who have nowhere else to go. "Everything is set up so they know we took some time to say 'hey, we know you guys are coming, come on in, we have a place for you to rest already,'" Chantrice Horn, resident coordinator at Shelter House, said. The Unitarian Church was the initial emergency shelter location in Iowa City, but some unforeseen issues pushed back the open date. "At the end of last week, we find out there was some problems with us getting water and heat to the building," Mark Setterh, Shelter House executive director, said. The temporary location at Zion Lutheran will stay open as long as repairs are being done at the Unitarian Church. Organizers said they won't turn anyone away.

CBS2 Chief Meteorologist Terry Swails'  Weather First Forecast

The rest of the week will feature mostly sunny skies, but frigid temperatures as highs will only be in the single digits. It'll be the first time we have single digit highs this early in the season since 2009. Night time lows will be below zero with wind chills likely -15 to -25 below by Thursday morning. Attention then turns to another winter storm what will impact the area Friday and Saturday. The long-range models still have some differences in track and intensity of this system, but over the next few days that will get ironed out.
