CBRL news August 2020
Welcome to CBRL’s August newsletter.

We hope that you've been enjoying summer and that you and your loved ones continue to stay well during this uncertain time.

This month we are advertising two opportunities with CBRL. We have now opened an invitation to tender for a short-term consultancy of CBRL's library across our institutes in East Jerusalem and Amman, please do spread the word of this opportunity with your networks. We are also advertising an outreach and administrative role shared with two other British Academy sponsored British International Research Institutes, more details for both positions below.

We are pleased to share news that the long-term British Institute at Amman for Archaeology and History (BIAAH - CBRL’s predecessor in Jordan) funded excavations at Khirbat Faris, led by former CBRL Director Alison McQuitty and Professor Jeremy Johns, have recently been published by Archaeopress. We will be sharing a blog post about this project in a forthcoming newsletter.

Following the devastating blast in Beirut earlier this month, along with our friends at the British Lebanese Association, we are endorsing the fundraising campaign led by the UK based NGO, Impact Lebanon. A commitment to transparency and accountability is Impact Lebanon's core value and they are working with apolitical and non-sectarian Lebanese NGO's on the ground that are carefully vetted. You can read more about their work and make a donation here.

Throughout the Autumn we will continue to bring you a varied programme of online webinars featuring the latest world-class research on the Levant and if you’ve missed any of our webinars, you can catch up via our YouTube and SoundCloud pages – further details below.

We hope you enjoy reading our news this month.

From all at CBRL
We are thrilled to announce that this year’s Contemporary Levant prize for best paper has been awarded to Dr Anne Irfan (Oxford University), for her paper entitled: ‘Petitioning for Palestine: Refugee appeals to international authorities.’ An honourable mention has been given to Dr Muna Dajani (LSE/Lancaster University) for her paper, 'Thirsty water carriers: the production of uneven waterscapes in Sahl al-Battuf.’ Both papers will be published as open-access in the journal's October issue . This month we invite tenders for consultation services regarding the assessment, evaluation and improvement of CBRL's library collection, model, and usage to improve visibility and sustainability. Deadline for application is 7th September. More details here.
Thanks to a hard-fought campaign by the late CBRL Assistant Director, Dr Andrea Zerbini and his former EAMENA colleague Michael Fradley, US restrictions on access to high-res satellite imagery over Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories have now been lifted. This change will have a significant impact for scholars using remote sensing in the region. Read more here.
CBRL along with two other British International Research Institutes - The British Institute of Persian Studies and the British Institute for Eastern Africa - are now recruiting a full-time Outreach & Administrative Coordinator for a six-month fixed term contract. Deadline for applications is 11th September. More information and details on how to apply can be found here.
