Rachel & Kaya: A story of love & healing

by Lori Hazan Midwest Regional Director

Kaya was being transported from Minnesota to Steward, Illinois. She was going to be fostered by Sally Ranken. Rachel Nilsen volunteered to transport Kaya on the final leg of the trip. It was her first time volunteering for CBRR&R. As she waited in her car for Kaya to arrive, she looked at Kaya's photo on Facebook. Something told her she needed to foster this Chessie. She was hesitant though, because she was feeling emotionally vulnerable, having recently lost both of her Chessies to cancer. She decided to call me.

"Can I foster Kaya, instead of taking her to Sally's?" she asked.

"I don't see why not," I replied.

Rachel completed the foster paperwork, and I approved it. I also notified Sally, who replied, "That is awesome!"

When Rachel and Kaya arrived home, Rachel brought out a basket of toys her previous Chessies played with. Kaya took out a purple plush toy. She carried it in her mouth and immediately proceeded to walk upstairs to Rachel's bedroom. It was as if she had done it before.

In the following weeks, Rachel stayed in touch with me. Rachel and Kaya were bonding, and Rachel was beginning to think about adopting Kaya. But she needed more time, still grieving the loss of her two previous Chessies. We talked about this at length.

"When you're ready, let me know," I told Rachel. It was a relationship not to be rushed, in my judgement.

Several weeks after this discussion, Rachel called me.

"This girl isn't going anywhere," Rachel said. "Does this mean you want to adopt Kaya?" I asked. Rachel replied emphatically, "Yes!"

And so, she did!

Rachel continues to help with Midwest transports. She also helps our foster, Sally Ranken. It seems she has worked through her grief by adopting Kaya and by helping other Chessies.

Rachel's adoption of Kaya is a story of love and healing. You might say it's a perfect example of a statement I occasionally refer to: "We rescue Chessies and sometimes people, too."

Clark is a 4 year old male chessie. He is loyal, loving and playful. Clark is a trained duck hunting dog and is always wanting to retrieve. He’s great with people and kids, but cautious when strangers approach his property. He is socialized with other dogs and enjoys playing. He is crate trained, potty trained, leash trained, etc.

I am looking for a home where he can be loved for the incredible dog he is, and cared for during his seizure episodes. He has suffered from these since the day we brought him home as a puppy. The first 1.5-2 years of his life they were constant while we tried medicines, food changes, etc.

The seizures are now relatively under control with a combo of medication prescribed by a neurologist. They currently manifest in clusters occurring randomly, but usually every 4-8 weeks, lasting about 2 minutes.

An ideal home will be able to accommodate his seizures, let him enjoy life, and above all love him.

Chelsea Daisy begins her leg repair journey

Chelsea Daisy’s orthopedic surgery has been scheduled for September 5th, 2024!

This sweet dog has been through a lot in her short life. She came into our rescue in 2023 as a neglected puppy, and then suffered a broken leg. She landed with a wonderful foster family who did everything they could to help her heal, but in spite of their best efforts her leg did not mend properly. Because her broken bones did not grow back at the same rate, her leg is now quite deformed and she is already lame. Without surgery she will have chronic pain and increasing lameness.

Her foster parents and the CBRRR MidAtlantic Team have worked hard to find the best solution for Chelsea Daisy. They have met with several surgeons and have received the same recommendation (and comparable pricing) from each. The recommended surgery to correct the alignment of her leg will have a 12-16 week recovery period and a very good prognosis for a return to normal function.

In preparation for surgery Chelsea Daisy and her foster parents have completed an obedience course (to help control her puppy energy during the recovery period) and have taken her on vacation to Colonial Williamsburg.

Her surgery has been scheduled for September 5 at the Skylos Sports Medicine Clinic in Maryland. She will be having a CT scan beforehand to aid the surgeons, and will have PT and several series of radiographs afterwards. We expect the costs to total around $13,000.

We would very much appreciate any help with the costs of this newest surgery.

Thank you very much for your continued generosity.
