On Sunday, April 13, our beloved Rescue Chesapeake, Mocha crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We miss him so much, and his best buddy, Sadie is mourning her brother. Mocha loved and lived life to the fullest, and was taken too soon, as he was going to be 8 years old in a month. He was “Mama’s Boy” and was always near me. Some of his favorite activities were swimming, and romping in the snow, and playing “Jolly Ball,” taking long walks and exploring, and camping, and being with his family that he loved. He was a loyal companion to the end, and he knew that Mama was right there singing to him, petting him and loving him when he took his final breath.
I’ve been going through some photos, and there are so many, but here are some of my favorites. In January, Amber the corgi also crossed the Rainbow Bridge. They are together again.

All of our CBRR&R dogs and their adopters are special. But an extra special adoption comes to my mind, as Father's Day approaches.
Jack called me, interested in adopting a Chessie. Jack was an older gentleman, in Ohio. He lived alone on a large acreage, with a large house, an unoccupied guest house and a pond. He didn't mention that his wife was deceased, but there were clues that clearly gave me that understanding. Jack had an adult daughter who, like Jack, was a real estate agent. Jack was winding down from this career, but his daughter would pick him up once a week, to look at one of the houses they were handling. That kept Jack active in his career.
Jack called me a couple of times and shared his vast knowledge and passion of the Chessie breed. He clearly knew a great deal about the breed. I found him so interesting, I didn't realize each of his calls lasted for over an hour. He also shared the story of his then, recent loss. He had a young female Chessie. She loved to run around on the property and swim in the pond. Life was good until a single event changed everything. The dog saw a flock of geese in the sky and she chased it. As she was chasing them, she ran across a road and was hit by a car and died. Needless to say, it broke Jack's heart. I knew from previous phone conversations and a virtual interview we had, that this man NEEDED a dog. We didn't have a dog that fit his profile, so I closely followed the "available dog" list for a while.
One day, Jack called me to say there was a dog named "Ivy" in another region and he was interested in her. With the help of his daughter, Jack was able to get Ivy. After Ivy was adopte, Jack's daughter sent me a photo she took of Jack and Ivy and she thanked me for helping her father adopt another Chessie. As the photo shows, Jack is holding Ivy on his lap. On the table, next to Jack is a framed photo of his wife. It seemed at that moment, Jack was surrounded by the 3 loves of his life.
On this Father's Day, I will be thinking about Jack and how he impacted me, through his knowledge and passion for the Chessie breed, for his relationship with his daughter, and for his new found joy in adopting Ivy.

Sarah, whom I’ve known for over 20 years, reached out one day and said, “I think I have your next pup.” I had been searching for that perfect “cupcake”—a dog who would fit seamlessly into our family. We were all still hesitant, still healing after unexpectedly losing our last rescue, Bentleigh, who passed away peacefully in her sleep.
My wife, while a dog lover, carries a healthy fear from a childhood incident. That’s part of why we were being so careful. And with Kody, there was some uncertainty—his history with other dogs and children wasn’t known. Still, at the end of the day, we both trusted Sarah. So we gave the green light.
As we worked out the logistics to bring Kody home, we offered to drive up, meet halfway—whatever it took. But Carroll, his devoted foster and nurse during his recovery, said she already had a trip planned to our area and would bring him down herself.
Later, we learned that the trip wasn’t just about convenience—Carroll was quietly interviewing us. If she didn’t feel good about where Kody was going, she was prepared to take him right back. Kody, as he tends to do, had carved out a special place in her heart. And she wasn’t about to let him go to just any home.
When we brought Kody home, it was like he had always been here. He folded seamlessly into our daily life, bonding with each one of us in his own unique way. He’s an equal-opportunity snuggler, tail-wagger, and heart-healer. And the bond he quickly formed with our Golden, Izzie, was instant. They became fast friends, romping through the yard, sharing toys, and curling up together like lifelong companions.
Kody has proven to be the perfect fit in every way. He loves being out on the boat, paddling around the pool, and proudly takes on the role of “hallway monitor” any time he feels his family needs a little extra guarding. His personality is equal parts goofball, guardian, and gentle soul. He’s everything we didn’t know we needed.
We are endlessly grateful to Sarah, Carol, Dr. Gallagher and everyone at Quartet who played a role in Kody’s healing and transition. Without their kindness, hard work, and commitment to giving dogs like Kody a second chance, our lives wouldn’t be as full and joyful as they are today.
Kody didn’t just find a new home—he found a family. And we found a piece of our hearts that we didn’t even realize was missing.

Woof! Scout here. We haven’t met – I’m a curly coated, small and in-charge, well-traveled Chessie girl from the Northwest. Its Dad’s day, and I wanted to give a bark-out to my bestest guy, my dogfather Jim. Oh yeah, my pesky little brother Bear, a Southwest boy, is nosing in on this as well. I will humor him if I must, but honestly peeps that dog has no dignity whatsoever. He is such a goofball nerd, with no protective instincts. He likes everybody. Sigh. Unlike me, who takes her job as protector of the farm against all, friend and foe alike, very seriously.
But I digress. Back to the dogfather. Bear (again, sigh) and I are really lucky that our dad made us part of his family when our first families could no longer keep us. He has taught us so much – to have polite manners (well, maybe not Bear), to not beg at the table (ok, I do this sometimes), to sleep on the bed, to not eat the small green attitudinal flying prey animal that lives in our house (he’s so annoying), to swim and hike, to love retrieving, and to snuggle politely on the couch. He has taught us to be good farm dogs. We love hanging with our peeps while they do outdoor chores. And maybe chasing a bunny or two (honestly who wouldn’t do that). He takes us to the vet, he feeds us yummy dog food, and really yummy dog cookies (we love those kong things that get stuffed with delicious smelly stuff when we go in our crates). Our dad is awesome.
You know who else is awesome? The online matchmaking group (I think its called CBRR&RoooooRooooo or something like that?) that hooked us up with our perfect family. A bark-out to them as well. Thank you!!! And Happy Fathers Day to all the Dogfathers out there.

Happy 5th birthday to my sweet rescue dog, Benny boy. From the moment I saw you, I knew you were meant to be with us. Big, beautiful, strong, and serious—the kind of dog that turns heads and quietly captures hearts.
We went to pick up another dog that day after losing our beautiful boy Mason. Then we saw you. And when it was time to leave, Annie made it clear she wasn’t going without you. She jumped right into our car, as if to say, “If he’s going, I’m going too.”
A year and a half later, you’re the best boy. Loyal, steady, and full of love, you’ve brought so much joy into our lives. We didn’t just rescue you, Benny— you (and Annie) rescued us right back.
Happy birthday good boy.

We welcome six 3-month-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppies into rescue and they got to spend the day at the vet, all have Coccidia which is caused by microscopic parasites that live in the wall of a dog’s intestine.
