Help with Abby's Emergency Surgery

Abby recently faced a life-threatening emergency — she was diagnosed with pyometra, a severe uterine infection. By the time she reached the vet, her uterus was filled with five pounds of pus, and she was on the verge of going septic. Without immediate surgery, Abby wouldn’t be here with us today.

Thanks to swift action and an amazing veterinary team, Abby made it through. She’s now home, resting comfortably, and soaking up all the love and care she deserves.

This lifesaving surgery came with significant, unexpected costs. Every dollar truly makes a difference. If you’re able, please consider donating to help cover Abby’s care.

Any funds raised beyond Abby’s needs will go directly toward helping the next Chesapeake Bay Retriever in need.

Your kindness and generosity give dogs like Abby a second chance at a happy, healthy life. Thank you for being part of Abby’s journey and for making a lifesaving difference. 💙🐾

Teamwork Leads to Love

Rizz is related to Midwest's Sonny, now Simon, adopted by Karin and Bob in Pennsylvania. Two other Chessies from the same rescue effort were handled by Paula Knight in the North Central Region. All four of these dogs likely would have been killed, if they hadn't been rescued. Thank you, Sally Ranken, for helping Rizz overcome his significant fears. Thank you, Ryan and Mandy, for adopting Rizz. We know he's going to have a wonderful life!

Talk about teamwork!

Puppy Love in Southwest - 6 month update

This puppy love story all started here...

Here's an update on these bundles of love, and puppy teeth.

Kida is doing well, about 50 lbs. Still crazy! Fetching well, loves the pool Baja shelf , needs more swimming lessons

Gus weighs about 50 lbs which was last check 2-3 weeks ago. He’s definitely keeping our hands full but we’re having fun with it.

Teddy is about 70lbs and a total love bug. Velcro dog He knows Sit, down and stay and still working on retrieval training

Tessa handled the chaos of kids running around, all the sights and sounds, with total ease. Tessa is definitely a “stop and smell the flowers” kind of pup.

Brisco is doing great! Loves big brother Apallo! Wild and crazy in the best way. Super smart

Brookie is weighing in at 42 lbs now and continues to be a typical smart, rugged little Chessie. She’s incredibly bright and does best off-leash. She knows all the basics—heel, sit, wait, down, reverse—and she’ll stop on a dime when I ask her to “wait” mid-run, which I do for safety. Her recall is great unless she’s feeling competitive with the other dogs, where she’ll grumble all the way to me if she’s in last place.

She has a ton of personality. She moans and groans like a human when she stretches—she’s done that since day one—and she absolutely loves towels, often dragging them around to create little beds. She’s nose-to-nose with the cat half the time indoors, but outside, the cat hilariously chases her. She also has a habit of walking into the shower daily, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she naps in there when I’m not home. Every day she makes me laugh—she may not be the fastest, but she’s certainly steady and full of charm.

CBRR&R Birthday Club!

Happy 1st Birthday to Rowdy SW Alumni

From Rowdy's new family

He’s such a special boy! I adopted him from the rescue at 5 months old and takes seizure medication, but that doesn’t slow him down a bit. He is my first Chessie and keeps me on my toes. He’s getting special cookies today to celebrate.

Happy 3rd Birthday to Rizzo SE & MA Alumni

Happy 3rd Birthday to our awesome rescue Rizzo. What a great surprise to learn from Embark that his bday is most likely April 29th. Mine is April 30th, so we get to celebrate together. Rizzo came to us soon after losing my dog Jase and it was like he was sent by him to ease our pain. What was Jase’s bday? April 28. Seems like it was meant to be. Thank you CBRR&R for making the connection! Going on 1.5 years together and he’s amazing…pretty good big brother, too!— with Sarah Scheel Cook and Lori Allan Vaillancourt.

Happy 10th Birthday to Bailey SE Alumni

Alumni Bailey turns 10 today !! 4 year Gotcha Day on May 2nd !!

Want to see your CBRR&R alumni on the Birthday & Gotcha club, send name, photo, age and any other fun details to birthdayclub

Happy update on Gunner

Huge thanks to everyone who donated and sent love to Gunner—your support made his surgery possible!

From his Foster Mama

"He’s doing pretty well overall. He’s on chicken, rice, and pumpkin for now and even figured out how to chew his Kong with the flexible cone on! We took a little walk tonight—he moved slower than usual but clearly enjoyed himself. It’s always amazing to see how well he navigates the world, even without his sight"

We’re so grateful for your help getting this sweet boy the care he needed.

Attention Members: Roo-newal month - July

Renew Your CBRR&R Membership this July and keep the love going!

July is more than just fireworks and summer fun—it’s also time for our annual membership renewal drive at CBRR&R! It’s been a few years since we’ve done this, but we believe it’s time to refresh and rebuild our active membership base. We’re also using this opportunity to reconnect with our community. Renewing your membership lets us know you’re still with us and still passionate about the work we do. It will also help us identify and welcome new, and engaged members who are committed to the mission of CBRR&R.

Your membership dues do so much more than just keep your name on our roster. They are the heartbeat of our rescue mission.

Why Your Membership Dues Matter:

  • They help keep the lights on—literally. From vet bills to transport costs, your support helps cover essential expenses.
  • They give you a voice—members vote in our elections and help guide the future of CBRR&R.
  • They keep our rescue family strong—members are invited to our annual meetings and events, where your passion and presence matter.

Whether you're renewing your commitment or joining us for the first time, you're not just paying dues—you're giving dogs in need a second chance. Let’s keep saving lives, one chessie at a time.

Stay tuned for more details on how to renew or join—coming soon!
