Meet Mikey, a radiant soul whose loving and playful nature captures the hearts of everyone he meets.

As Mikey's foster mom, I would like to share my insights about this wonderful dog. Mikey is a loving and playful Chesapeake Bay Retriever who thrives in the company of children, although his exuberance may occasionally lead to him knocking them over as he leans in for affection.

Rescued in September 2023 when his elderly owners could no longer care for him, Mikey is truly deserving of a permanent, loving home. Mikey delights in treats and outdoor adventures and is an excellent traveler.

If you have a pool or sprinkler, be prepared for Mikey to revel in the water, as it is one of his greatest joys. He is known to sit up and beg for treats or toys, he shows his playful personality. Protective by nature, Mikey will likely be your loyal guardian, I truly think he will come to my rescue long before our resident dog Moose would.

He even enjoys grooming sessions, which are viewed as a special treat by him.

It is important to note that Mikey has some health concerns, specifically elbow dysplasia, for which he has undergone several treatments that have significantly improved his quality of life as he approaches four years old.

We invite you to reach out to North Central regional director for more information about Mikey.

Remembering Ranger

from Rangers Daddy, Erik

On Friday, I had to say goodbye to my beloved Ranger, my loyal companion and the best dog I could ever hope for. At 13 and a half years old, I knew he was living on borrowed time, but the reality of his absence is no less profound.

Ranger had been struggling with walking for some time, but his incredible spirit never wavered. On Friday night, after coming back inside and settling into his bed, something changed. He suddenly couldn’t get up, and it was clear he had lost control of his legs. The emergency vet confirmed that he had likely lost feeling due to back issues that finally gave way. True to his resilient nature, Ranger enjoyed a bone on the way to the clinic.

Letting him go was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, even though it was the right one. Ranger brought so much joy, love, and companionship to my life. Like most Chessies, he was rarely more than a step away from me, and the house feels unbearably empty without him.

I’ll always cherish the memories we shared—his love for exploring the yard, his excitement as he opened presents, and the quiet comfort of his presence at my side. He truly was a gift, and I hope I gave him the life his original owners envisioned for him when they entrusted him to me.

Ranger, you were the very best, and I hope you’re running free now, unburdened by pain, with that same joy and curiosity that made you so special.

Rest easy, my sweet boy.
