Jekabpils Jewish community

CBS has re-established contact with the Jekabpils Jewish community.  Jekabpils is a town in Latvia and CBS provided assistance to the Jewish community there from 2009 until 2017.  Currently, there are 15 members of the Jewish community there.  Four members are Holocaust survivors and the remaining eleven people are in their 70s.  The Jewish community of Jekabpils are maintaining two Jewish cemeteries to the extent possible given their ages and limited resources.  Assistance is needed by the community to pay for its’ members utilities .  We are excited to be able to help the Jekabpils community and implore you to consider this fund when donating to the synagogue.  Thank you. Rikki Amesquita, CBS Liaison

Chesed and Tikun Olam

Our Tikun Olam heroes of the week are all the congregants who participated in our Shabbat of Love with Supportive Neighbors. Four of our families hosted Shabbat dinners for Christians who support Israel and want to know more about Judaism. This project was organized by Jewish Federation’s Outreach Partners. April Haskell and Mickey Passman as well as their spouses and children hosted four adults and four children. A wonderful time was had by all. Paulette and Nat Goodman hosted three young professionals who thoroughly enjoyed their experience at dinner and at services. Rita and Ken Kramen hosted a couple who not only enjoyed experiencing Shabbat dinner, but who wanted to come to services. The organizer, Serene Hudson, is eager with Rita to meet to cultivate and improve this experience. It is a gift to welcome support from our wider community and cultivate relationships not only within or

synagogue but beyond. Many thanks to the Haskell’s, the Passman’s, the Goodman’s and the Kramen’s who hosted our Christian neighbors. If you would like to nominate a person or persons for Tikun Olam heroes, please email [email protected]
