In Case You Missed It
Rabbi Kleinbaum: "When we say 'Never again,' we mean never again for anyone and everyone. We know: Kristallnacht comes exactly out of the hatred of the stranger. Only if we all join together—those at risk, and those who are not at as much risk—can we create a wall of love that protects, that is a place of bridges that create ways to get in and be safe. Never again means never again for anyone."

Kurt Weill (1900-1950), son of a cantor, was raised in a religious Jewish home in Dessau, Germany, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1935, fleeing Nazi takeovers in Europe. The musical “Lost In the Stars,” which premiered in 1949, was the last work Weill completed before his untimely death the following year.

The music is influenced and inspired by African-American musical idioms like jazz and spiritual melodies. This namesake song speaks about how far God’s promise of protection can feel sometimes. We connect this with Debbie Friedman’s “Mourning into Dancing,” to mark our current moment—perhaps the dawning of a new era.
