Volume 34 Number 9 May 2022
President's Message
One of my favorite Maya Angelou quotes is "Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud." As your "fearless leader" these past two years, my hope is that I took our club through some cloudy skies with the pandemic in a positive way. Despite the pandemic, we remained loyal to our mission and love of gardening.

Looking back was a chance for me to remember the engaging speakers, committee meetings, and friendships that kept us together and ready for the next journey. We were introduced to Zoom and a new way of communicating. We supported each other through issues of health, personal losses of family, and the passing of two beloved members. Our strength has been challenged but we have prevailed.

I will look forward to sharing news of the GCA Annual Meeting in Parsippany, New Jersey
at our own Annual Meeting/Awards and Luncheon. We will have much to celebrate with
congratulating two current Provisionals to Active membership, Diana Jacobson and
Ruth D. Minnes, along with our new Provisionals, President, and Executive Board. Our Awards presentation is always a special time to acknowledge achievements with our
members. Mark your calendars for May 19.

Finally, Lori and I want to thank all of you for the support and encouragement you provided us. We are grateful to have had this leadership opportunity to be a guide and inspiration.
Our membership will be in good hands with the new Executive Committee.
Your President, Cass Antle, will have a rainbow waiting for her.

All the best during the summer,
Lynn

Civic Projects
May……May flowers, May baskets, and “going A-Maying,” where everyone goes out for picnics, a Camelot experience.

At Piccadilly, more flowering sweet white Alyssum has been added around the Gingko tree, offering a welcome entrance into the garden. And HML’s native poppies are popping up to welcome all who enjoy a restful moment of pleasure. May your creative juices flow and flower as summer is near. Please mark your calendar for May 10 and 24. Thank you for all your hard work and commitment to our Committee. It’s been chock-full of sweet bouquets of fun. Happy May Day!

Warm spring and summer wishes,
Barbara Davidge and Marcia Harrington

Zone XII Presidents
Seven CBTSGC members joined members and presidents from the Bay Area clubs to learn about conservation efforts in San Francisco Bay and Pillar Point Harbor by Half Moon Bay. After talking with the Harbormaster and members of Save the Bay near the water, the whole group walked up to a sunny courtyard at a local restaurant. The group enjoyed a Mexican themed lunch, listened to speakers, and shared camaraderie with members from other clubs.
Floral Design
What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been….

This is the final newsletter message from your 2020-2022 Floral Design Chairs. Thank you Iris Huber, Jan Linkenbach, Judy Harrold, Chris Johnson, and Brenda Mauldwin for your leadership and creativity during our two years of Covid challenges.

It may be difficult to remember, but in 2020 we transitioned to video workshops with a welcome from Benda’s garden, hosted by Brenda and Jan. Then Chris opened her painting studio to continue our own Floral Design YouTube videos! Chris and Iris created the "Joys of Autumn" and "Wintertime Cheer" through 2021 with designs that you could watch and re-create at home. (ALL technology credit goes to Judy C.)

Finally, in 2022 we were able to hold in person workshops outside, masked in Jan’s garden. Our committee members flocked to these workshops, ignoring cold winds and sometimes rain. One of our outdoor workshops featuring sustainable grapevine wreaths, was featured in the GCA floral magazine, By Design.

Our GCA floral judges, Jan, Judy H, and Chris kept us familiar with all the principles and elements of design, and we even advanced to the theory and practice of leaf manipulation. (Well many advanced, one committee co-chair remained leaf challenged.)

Thank you all for a wonderful two years,
Judy Cunningham and Margaret Pelikan

Horticulture
The "Cuts and Cocktails" Horticulture Meeting held on April 28 proved to be a festive gathering. Our Hort Committee members met in Isabella’s garden for a few hours of sharing our individual special cuts, grooming, and exploring Julie Obering’s adjacent gardens. Isabella shared the recent changes that had taken place in Julie’s Garden. We were in awe of her crabapples, Princess alstroemerias, senecios and the tall Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster'. As a group, we wandered the gardens and surprised ourselves with the unique cuttings that may be available for our future GCA Club Flower Show's creative schedules. Isabella reviewed the schedule for the local Carmel Valley Garden Club Show which was held at Hidden Valley the next day. Our talented committee members entered their newly discovered treasures and won ribbons. What a treat it was to share our grooming tricks and different perspectives for the final placement of the cuts in the vases. As a good steward of recycled glass containers, Barbara Davidge shared a helpful tip about the unique vase shapes found in the pre-made mixed cocktail aisle of Whole Foods.
Cass reviewed the process for updating your GCA profile and reminded everyone that if they’d like to change their picture, she would be happy to help members accomplish this task. Simply email her your new picture, bring your password, and we shall update profiles after our luncheon on May 19. We sipped our cocktails and raised our glasses to CBTSGC cherished friendships.

P.S. On May 19 we will be joining the Floral Design Committee and adorning the tables of the MPCC Beach House with your "Blooming Beauties." Please be aware that you will be receiving an email outlining the instructions for these cuttings, as well as a reminder before May 19.

All of the members who contributed to the Carmel Valley Flower Show won ribbons. Chris Johnson entered two floral arrangements and one of them earned "Best in Show!" Congratulations!
P4P - Partners for Plants

North Dunes Habitat Restoration Project
April 19 was a busy morning at the North Dunes. Members removed about 165 pounds of weeds, which were recycled as green waste at the City yard. We also planted plugs of native dune species. Our next P4P workday is May 17.

Visiting Gardens
Special thanks to Brenda Mauldwin for taking charge of Visiting Gardens for many years. Because of her business, The Window Box, and her friendships, she has the contacts to lead us into special private gardens. A perfect gift for the hostess, her delicious chicken salad tucked into big croissants wrapped up in cloth napkins, fruit in cute paper cups, cookies.....to finish the dreamy tours with all of this is just an absolute treat!
She kept track of members who could not attend the tour of Shereen Caswell's Quail Meadow gardens last spring and arranged another tour for this group on April 29. Shereen graciously led the group through her extensive gardens that surround her lovely home.

Shereen Caswell is an artist with canvas and paint in her studio. Her artist's eye is evident in the colorful pallette that she creates with plants as well.

The Garden Club of America Annual Meeting ~ Parsippany, NJ

The eleven clubs of Zone IV welcomed GCA members to the 2022 Annual Meeting, Pathways from the Palisades to the Pinelands, which took place April 29 - 30, 2022.
The meeting was a unique opportunity to visit with old friends and make new acquaintances. Attendees heard from exceptional speakers, made connections with esteemed honorary members, learned from brilliant medalists, visited pastoral gardens, and took in the awe-inspiring Pathways flower show.

Lynn Carmichael, Susan Uydess, and MIssy Jensen attended the meeting. Because of Susan Uydess's efforts to propose Julie Packard, Julie was the recipient of The Margaret Douglas Medal.
JULIE PACKARD
OCEAN CONSERVATIONIST AND PHILANTHROPIST

The Margaret Douglas Medal, awarded for notable service to the cause of conservation education, will be presented to Julie Packard in recognition of her ocean stewardship and for elevating public awareness about the ocean environment.

Ocean conservationist and philanthropist, Julie Packard has spent her life promoting the preservation of ocean resources and environmental awareness. She has been a leading voice for science-based policy reform to support healthy oceans, convincing US politicians to change ocean policy to protect critical habitat in marine preserves.

As director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA), Monterey, California, since 1984, Julie has shared the wonders of the ocean with over two million annual visitors. She has worked to restore kelp forests and critical ecosystems, which aided in the recovery of sea otters. Under Julie’s leadership, MBA developed Seafood Watch in 1999 to promote buying only fish that are sustainably caught. By 2020, over eighty-five percent of the US grocery store chains and restaurants had committed to purchasing only sustainable seafood.

Under Julie Packard’s leadership, the MBA has become a leading ocean conservation organization, collaborating with aquaria worldwide, to form a global effort to preserve and protect the oceans.

Remembering Nevada Cook
Nevada joined the Carmel-by-the-Sea Garden Club in 2019. Nevada and Arthur (Skip) moved to Carmel from the Los Angeles area where they lived for many years. From day one she was generous, gladly sharing her beautiful home for Provisional meetings and welcoming our club for a general meeting. As a former practicing attorney, Nevada understood the importance of education. She was a wonderful teammate on the Scholarship committee. We worked together to interview local college deans and students. She was a generous donor to our Scholarship Fund as well.
Due to Covid, the past two years were a challenge in searching for college programs that were operational and with qualified scholarship applicants. Nevada’s comment was, “Have you ever worked so hard to give money away?” Nevada’s loving and sweet spirit was boosted by her humor. She will be missed greatly by the members of our club and the community as well.

Don't Forget to Read the Minutes

A Request from Sarah Bouchier, Historian, Liaison to GCA

She is putting together a binder containing significant articles from the past two years which include all articles about our club in the GCA magazines. She would like to receive any materials the committee heads would like included that they believe are important for preservation.
Show and Tell
Shared by Judy Cunningham: Lewisia is a plant genus, named for the American explorer Meriwether Lewis who encountered the species in 1806. The native habitat of Lewisia species is north facing cliffs in western North America. Local Native Americans ate the roots, which have also been used to treat sore throats.
Moraea villosa (peacock moraea) from South Africa.

And isn't it just like Diana Fish to have something beautiful and unusual growing in her garden!
Pat Cogan has a brand new arch leading into her front garden. As soon as the paint had dried, she planted 'Sally Holmes' roses on each side. The first blooms have opened. A perfect addition to "Rose Cottage."
Lynn Carmichael finds great joy in her many varieties of roses that she has lovingly collected and curated over the years. 'Miami Moon' is one of her very favorites!
Washing dishes is easy for Marilee Wandke when this beauty puts on a show in the morning sunlight on the ledge above her sink! The fun part is that it grew from a small plant that Judy Cunningham nurtured from an heirloom violet that has been thriving for many years in her family.
It has been my pleasure to create the newsletter for our Carmel-by-the-Sea Garden Club these past three years. You all have been so supportive, encouraging, and helpful. With your help, I have been able to showcase our club's many activities, bring GCA events to our notice, and share news of conservation and local events that relate to our interests and goals. Our newsletter can be read in several digital formats, is shared with Zone XII leaders, and is posted on our CBTSGC website and the GCA website. Thanks to all of you!
