President's Message

Dear Ladies,

Laughter and love sprinkled with summer tales filled the air as we gathered on the September 22nd for our first Carmel-by-the-Sea General Meeting. What a joy it was to welcome our new Provisionals, hear exciting plans for the year from our Committee Chairs and prepare for an invigorating year of “Discovering Joy in the Garden”.

I’d like to remind you of our newly adopted additional moment to our monthly meetings: “Beautiful Blooms” is a time when any member may celebrate the marvel that surrounds us - in friends, travel, accomplishments and challenges. These awe-inspiring moments will be shared (with a small donation) and the donations will be added to our scholarship fund. It’s another way for us to stay closely connected in our busy lives.

How refreshing it has been to embark on travel over the past few months. Judy Harrold, Susan Osborne and I ventured to Floriade in Amsterdam. We were inspired by the innovation and vision for the future gardens of the world. Barbara Davidge and Chris Johnson have returned home from the Shirley Meneice Horticulture Conference in Boston at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. We look forward to hearing about the seminars offered, the educational takeaways and of course, a few tales of their shenanigans.

Please join me in thanking Courtney Doust for the latest issue of our CBTSGC Newsletter.

Happy Fall,

Cass

Christmas Community Projects

The first get together will be on Monday, October 24, at 10:00 am in Iris Huber’s garden. We will decide on the tray favors for the Carmel Foundation and assemble the small gift tags.

Our second meeting will be on December 6 at 10:00 am in Jan Linkenbach’s garden.

It will be a workshop to assemble table arrangements for the Foundation and decorate our popular herd of reindeer for Gathering for Women.

Civics

At our September 13th workday, we had a productive morning working in the garden and enjoyed Marietta’s treats. Ruth presented the history of the Harrison Memorial Library and our Club’s commitment to the redesign of the garden.

We are having an agave sale on October 11th at Harrison Memorial Library. There will be three very large agaves and an assortment of other sizes for sale. Please let Isabella know what size you would like to buy.

Conservation

The four program dates, now on our club calendar, are focused on “All Creatures Great and Small” and how these creatures act as bellwethers on the health of our environment. We start with the Condors in Big Sur on October 12th, continue to Monarch butterflies, then other pollinators and finally end the year with the importance of insects.

Bay Visions Zoom Meeting:

Alarmed by fish carcasses washing ashore from San Mateo to San Francisco to Oakland? Or by warnings to avoid swimming, kayaking or other activities on the Bay? Join Dr. James Cloern, senior scientist emeritus at the U.S. Geological Survey (and engaging speaker!), to learn more about the cause and possible solutions.

All garden club members are welcome to join Dr. Cloern’s 30-minute Zoom presentation on October 7 at 11:00 am. Understanding what’s causing the algal bloom is crucial, because without preventive measures, this could be an annual occurrence.

Zoom details on our website calendar.

Healthy Yard Pledge:

The majority of land in the United States is owned by private citizens like us and together we can make a real difference. Studies have shown even very small amounts of pesticides, fertilizers and pharmaceuticals in our water can adversely impact human health. Taking the pledge is an important and simple step to a cleaner safer water supply.

Welcome to all of you who signed up for Floral Design. Wow! We’re thrilled with your overwhelming interest. We’ll be getting ready for our Club Flower Show in April and will focus on the types of arrangements in the flower show classes.

This workshop will focus on Modern Mass Arrangements. We will provide the container and flowers, floral chicken wire and some other supplies that might help with your construction.

Because we are such a large, enthusiastic group it is REALLY, REALLY important for you to RSVP so we have enough material for everyone. We’ll blow a large part of our budget on this one! Please RSVP no later than Monday, October 17. For last minute RSVPs, you are more than welcome to attend and observe. We just may not have plant material for you.

GCA has designed some workshop modules that are very helpful. To find more information please go to the GCA website and check out the GCA workshop modules. (GCA-Members Area-GCA Committee Pages-Floral Design-Love Flower Arranging-Workshop Modules)

Garden History & Design

“Mission Accomplished” for Hallie Mitchell Dow’s Carmel Garden

We love it when successful garden projects come together and are in sync with other garden elements.  When Hallie Mitchell Dow was planning to include a fountain in her Carmel garden, she had thoughts of the Carmel Mission fountain as her inspiration.   Hallie worked closely with club member, Missy Jensen and Missy said… we wanted something that looked inspired by the Carmel Mission which coordinates with the theme of the door painting. Here is a fountain that we put in Hallie’s garden when I designed this area. Hallie commented …. Missy, I love my fountain and remember you went to great lengths to find it. It is almost an exact replica of the large fountain in the Mission courtyard. I love it and don’t think one could find a replacement. It still works perfectly

Horticulture

Barbara Davidge and Chris Johnson attended the Shirley Meneice Workshop in Boston. In order to have seeds ready for the Seed Share at the workshop, Hort had a seed cleaning and packing meeting. Barbara had gathered seeds of hummingbird sage, Salvia spathaceae, and Clay brought seeds from Breadseed Poppy, Papaver somniferum. Isabella donated seeds of Orlaya grandiflora, White lace flower. Barbara taught members how to separate the seeds from the pods, check for insect damage and pack into small, labeled envelopes. Two of the Provisionals, Hilary and Kathy were able to help along with Ruth, Diana J, Margaret, Bonnie, Marilee, Incy and Clay.

Shirley Meneice delegates Chris Johnson and Barbara Davidge visited "Garden in the Woods" in Framingham, Massachusetts. It is a botanic garden that showcases New England native plants in a beautiful, natural setting.

Hort’s next meeting will be a propagation workshop at Barbara Davidge’s home at 10:00 on October 6. There may be a Mother and Daughter class in our spring flower show (not your daughter, your plant’s daughter😉). You might want to visit the nursery before the meeting to buy a one-gallon plant to propagate for the show. Some suggestions to propagate from cuttings are - various salvias, geraniums or spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum). If you have a plant in a pot that sets seed, you could bring the seeds. It is also possible to propagate by division or layering. Barbara will explain the various techniques. Here is the class description from the old schedule.

CLASS 10 | SEEING DOUBLE - MOTHER AND DAUGHTER

A single plant exhibited along with the parent plant from which it was propagated, each in a separate but compatible terracotta container not to exceed 8” in diameter. A GCA Propagation Card is required. Both plants will be judged.

Happy growing!

Bonnie Brooks loves her floating solar energy water pump so much that she wanted you all to know about it. Since it is solar powered, it can simply be placed into a bird bath, small pond or garden decoration and it will circulate the water.

The birds love it. No electricity or battery required.

Bonnie ordered hers online.

Earthbound Farm Stand

Earthbound is now offering seasonal CSA boxes with certified organic goods. Pick up your box on Wednesdays at the Farm Stand in Carmel Valley  10 am - 3:30 pm. Contact TJ Silva for more info on how to order, 831.276.4227 or [email protected].
