Pi Day is Coming Soon and We Need Your Help!
Attention all Pi enthusiasts, March 14th is rapidly approaching and with it comes Pi Day! Each and every year we spend 3/14 celebrating this special number in all its irrationality. On March 14
th
, 5th through 8th grades will spend the afternoon celebrating this mathematical constant. On this day we will celebrate
π
with a variety of competitions and of course lots and lots of Pi(e)!
5
th
through 8
th
graders are allowed to participate in several different competitions that will take place on 3/14.
Recitation of the Digits of Pi:
This competition will put your memorization skills to the test! Participants will be given a chance to recite the digits of Pi that they have memorized. The person who recites the most digits, without error, wins! (There will be a winner for 5/6 and a winner for 7/8). Start memorizing!
Pi Literature:
Students have the opportunity to write a piece of literature with regards to the mathematical constant Pi. Get creative! It can be a short story, a poem, a song! Entries are due Friday, March 9
th
so that the judges can pick the winners! (There will be a winner for 5/6 and a winner for 7/8).
Homemade Pi(e) Baking Competition:
This is the chance for those students who love to bake to wow the judges with their baking skills. The student with the most delicious homemade pi(e) will be declared ultimate
chamPIon
!
Pi(e) Eating Competition:
A select few lucky pi(e) enthusiasts will get a chance to show of their chops…do they have what it takes to be the fastest pi(e) punisher CCA has ever seen? The quickest quasher of their pi(e) wins!
There will also be a few other completions held on 3.14 that students will be allowed to participate in as they indulge their sweet tooth on this mathematically masterful day!
If students wish to participate in any of the official competitions they MUST sign up for their competition of choice. The sign-up sheet can be found outside of Mr. Andrew Loomis’s classroom. Sign-up quick because these spots won’t last long!
ATTENTION PARENTS: Pi Day cannot happen without your support! Plus you can gain some valuable volunteer hours in helping us celebrate this wonderful day!
There are several different opportunities that arise as a result of Pi Day. We need LOTS of pi(e). CCA offers 1 volunteer hour for each homemade pi(e) brought in by a family (up to two hours per family) OR CCA offers 1 volunteer hour for 2 store bought pi(e)s (up to two hours per family).
We will also need some lovely volunteers to help run the afternoon (set up, pi(e) cutting, pi(e) distributing, supervision, AND clean-up). Please see the following link to sing-up for this wonderful day!

Dear CCA Parents,
We have received serious complaints from our neighbors.
Many parents are not practicing traffic safety protocol and CCA traffic rules. There have also been cases of property damage caused by parents driving on lawns.
In order to maintain a respectful and peaceful relationship with the home owners residing near CCA, we are asking everyone to please review the
Parking and Traffic
page on CCA's website.
For your convenience, we have copied the Traffic Safety section of that page below.
Thank you for your immediate compliance and cooperation.
TRAFFIC SAFETY
Please ensure that you are following all of CCA’s traffic rules, including those listed below. They are in place to keep our children safe and secure. If these rules are broken we will not allow you to pick up your student/carpool until we open the front lot at 3:45pm.
Should you decide to park in the neighborhood and walk in your student/students you need to use the crosswalk. A staff member is at the light on Dayton and Caley ready to assist you across safely. Cars DO NOT expect people, let alone students, to come out between cars and some are not paying attention.
1. Neighborhood Etiquette: according to the Colorado parking law, no vehicle may be parked….
· Within 5 Feet of a Private Driveway
· Within 15 Feet of a Fire Hydrant
· Within 20 Feet of a Crosswalk
· Within 30 Feet of a Flashing Beacon, Signal, Stop Sign, or Yield Sign
2. Please be aware of the NO PARKING signs located in the neighborhoods.
3.
Right-hand turns
from Caley Avenue onto South Florence Way are prohibited. There is a sign before the four-way stop posted.
4. Driving on the sidewalk when completing U-turns is ILLEGAL.
5.
U-turns
are illegal on Caley Avenue and there are signs posted.
6.
Left-hand turns
into CCA’s parking lot and onto Elmira Circle are illegal from 7:15 a.m. – 8:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Our front parking lot will be closed from 7:25am – 8:15am and again from 2:45pm – 3:45pm. Do not move the chain!

Kay Moriarity was born in California and raised in Arvada, Colorado. She attended Metro State for two years and moved to the south end of town when she married her husband, Daniel, in 1989. Their three daughters all had the privilege of attending CCA from 1999-2012.
Kay has been working at recess for twelve years, and here and there at the front desk.
She likes to fill her time with family, hiking, snowshoeing, cooking, reading, and crunching through fall leaves. Mrs. Moriarity also loves to garden and is sponsoring a student-run garden club at CCA; if anyone is interested in joining, just inquire at recess!
Mrs. Moriarity has nothing but good things to say about CCA. She feels it is exemplary in more ways than merely academics, and is grateful to be a part of this wonderful school.

Jenny Young, is the 5
th
and 6
th
grade writing teacher and volleyball coach. She is
a Colorado native and a Broncos fan to the core.
Mrs. Young grew up on the west side of town, graduating from Bear Creek High School and a few years later the University of Northern Colorado where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English along with her K-6 teaching licensure. She attained a master’s degree in education in 2000. She taught for 21 years at a small school in Lakewood before taking her current position at CCA.
Mrs. Young has three children, Kevin (21), Kyle (18), and Savannah (7) who is a second grade student in Ms. Coyle’s class. Mrs. Young and her husband, Brian, are major sports enthusiasts especially when it comes to the NCAA Florida Gators. When she’s not watching sports, or hanging with her family, she likes to play volleyball and goof-off with her close-knit group of long-time friends.
Mrs. Young is very passionate about teaching writing. In fact, she considers the time she spends in her classroom with her students the best and most rewarding part of her day. Mrs. Young encourages her 5
th
and 6
th
graders every day to improve their sentence structure, organization, and the over-all quality of their writing. She looks forward to each class she teaches at CCA.

TR
AFFIC/SAFETY:
JHL has planned ahead to minimize the impact to normal school operations, including traffic. Morning drop off and afternoon pick up will not change. JHL has scheduled all deliveries and truck/equipment traffic outside of our drop off and pick up times.
JHL created a safety video for our website, highlighting the efforts JHL takes to separate students from the construction as well as their thorough background checks for their employees, and other important efforts being taken to ensure a safe construction site.
JHL, DCS, RTA architects, and CCA leadership meet and discuss new construction tasks that involve safety matters at weekly Owner, Architect, Constructor meetings to ensure the safest site possible.
TOURS:
We are working with JHL Constructors and DCS, CCA's Owner's Rep, to schedule monthly tours for anyone interested in walking the project to hear and see first hand the progress being made. These tours will be held immediately following our regularly scheduled monthly PTO meetings. The next tour date will be 03
/16
immediately following the PTO meeting.
Remember to wear close-toed shoes to participate!
