for the Spring Art Show at Waldorf West Library

The Charles County Arts Alliance is now accepting submissions for the Spring Art Show, a multi-media public exhibit, to be held at the Waldorf West Library, 10405 O'Donnell Place, Waldorf, MD, from April 4 to June 25, 2016. The Library consists of four separate gallery spaces on two floors. 

Local artists are invited to submit a maximum of two works of art on any subject, to the Charles County Arts Alliance for consideration (there is no submission fee). Artwork entries must be submitted electronically as digital images (jpegs) attached to an email sent to waldorfwestgallery@gmail.com.
The email must include:
  • Artist's name
  • Artist's mailing address
  • Artist's email address
  • Artist's phone number
  • Artist's biography (half-page max, in MS-Word)
  • Artist's headshot (jpeg)
  • Title of artwork
  • Medium/materials used
  • Size/dimensions
  • Year created
  • Price, if applicable
Artists who have previously shown in the gallery are invited to submit new work for consideration. Selections will be made by the Gallery Committee and the artists will be notified in early March. All artwork must be wired and ready to hang.

On Saturday, April 9, 2016, a "Meet the Artists" Public Reception will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, at the Waldorf West Library's Main Gallery, to honor all the artists participating in the spring show.

Each year the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) awards $1,000 scholarships to  one outstanding graduating senior from each high school in Charles County to further his or her study of the arts (performing, visual or literary) at a four-year college or  university.

The first students at the Waldorf School danced around the Maypole in 1930 when it was founded and the School is now inviting young homeschooled boys and girls, ages 6-12, to revive and celebrate this tradition by learning this dance and other traditional country dances. Dance training is not necessary and there are no fees associated with this enrichment activity. Friends of the Old Waldorf School is reaching out to the homeschooled community because the practices, which will be limited to one or two days a week, will be held during the mornings or early afternoons at the school beginning in March  and culminating with a presentation of the dances at the May 1 event. The Department of Natural Resources, in partnership with the Maryland Forest Conservancy District Boards, is sponsoring an Arbor Day poster contest, Trees Are Terrific....in Cities and Towns!  Fifth-grade students are encouraged to share their appreciation for Maryland's forests and trees through original works of art. The department will choose the top three posters to receive tree plantings at the winning artist's school: first place will win 15 trees; second place will receive 10 trees; and third place will get five.

All posters must be between 8.5- by 11-inches and 22- by 28-inches, and done in marker, crayon, paint pens, watercolor, ink, acrylic, regular or colored pencil, and/or tempera paint. They must be delivered or mailed to one of the state forest service offices no later than 4:00 pm, on February 26, 2016.  To locate the mailing or delivery address for your county, go to http://dnr2.maryland.gov/forests/Pages/2016_ArborDayPosterContest.aspx.
Posters will be judged on a county level and then submitted to the Maryland Urban and Community Forestry Committee to compete at the statewide level. Winners' teachers will be notified by March 25. Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies. Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.  Rated R.

Margaret Noel's mixed-media paintings fuse collage with encaustic to portray landscapes that have been altered and abandoned by industry. Using layers of paper and wax to distort and fragment the original forms, the paintings juxtapose the sharp geometry of industrial architecture against the fluid lines of the surrounding landscape. In the finished pieces, some landscape elements are fully articulated: recognizable and concrete. Black Bear and Migratory Game Bird Stamp Contests

Waterfowl and wildlife artists are invited to submit their original artwork for the 20th Annual Maryland Black Bear Conservation and 42nd Annual Migratory Game Bird stamp design contests.  The Black Bear Conservation Stamp contest is open to Maryland residents and non-residents. Each contestant may submit one entry for a non-refundable $10 entry fee. Proceeds from the sale of these stamps and other related products are used to compensate farmers who experience agricultural damage caused by black bears.   The Migratory Game Bird Stamp contest is open to Maryland residents only. Each contestant may submit up to three entries ($15 for one entry; $20 for two; $30 for three). March 3:  The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows.  In the summer of 1938, Layla Beck's father, a United States senator, cuts off her allowance and demands that she find employment on the Federal Writers' Project, a New Deal jobs program. Within days, Layla finds herself far from her accustomed social whirl, assigned to cover the history of the remote mill town of Macedonia, West Virginia, and destined, in her opinion, to go completely mad with boredom. But once she secures a room in the home of the unconventional Romeyn family, she is drawn into their complex world and soon discovers that the truth of the town is entangled in the thorny past of the Romeyn dynasty.

March 5:  The Paris Wife by Paula McLain.  Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness--until she meets Ernest Hemingway. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group, the fabled "Lost Generation," that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.  Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the hard-drinking, fast-living, and free-loving life of Jazz Age Paris. As Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history and pours himself into the novel that will become  The Sun Also Rises, Hadley strives to hold on to her sense of self as her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more challenging. Eventually they find themselves facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage: a deception that will lead to the unraveling of everything they've fought so hard for.

March 5:  The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Volume 1:  The Pox Party by M.T. Anderson.   Young Octavian is being raised by a group of rational philosophers known only by numbers -- but it is only after he opens a forbidden door that he learns the hideous nature of their experiments, and his own chilling role in them. Set in Revolutionary Boston, M. T. Anderson's mesmerizing novel takes place at a time when Patriots battled to win liberty while African slaves were entreated to risk their lives for a freedom they would never claim. The first of two parts, this deeply provocative novel re-imagines the past as an eerie place that has startling resonance for readers today.

March 10:  The Long Way Home:  A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel by Louise Penny.    Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book,  The Balm in Gilead , in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole."  While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home and she wants Gamache's help to find him.  Together with his former second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, and Myrna Landers, they journey deeper and deeper into Québec. And deeper and deeper into the soul of Peter Morrow. A man so desperate to recapture his fame as an artist, he would sell that soul. And may have.

March 23:  Just One Evil Act: A Lynley Novel by Elizabeth George.   Barbara is at a loss: Hadiyyah, the daughter of her friend Taymullah Azhar, has been taken by her mother, and Barbara can't really help; Azhar has no legal claim.  Just when Azhar is beginning to accept his soul-crushing loss, he gets more shocking news: Hadiyyah has been kidnapped from an Italian marketplace. As both Barbara and her partner, Inspector Thomas Lynley, soon discover, the case is far more complex than a typical kidnapping, revealing secrets that could have far-reaching effects outside of the investigation. With both her job and the life of a little girl on the line, Barbara must decide what matters most and how far she's willing to go to protect it.

About the Charles County Arts Alliance, Inc.


The mission of the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) is to stimulate, promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts and the creative spirit.  Founded in 1987, the CCAA promotes ALL the arts in Charles County:  music, visual art, drama, dance and literature.

The CCAA is the official arts council of Charles County and is recognized as such by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) of the State of Maryland.  In this capacity, the CCAA serves as the "umbrella" organization for the arts community in Charles County.  The CCAA promotes Charles County arts organizations and individuals, provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and the schools through its annual arts grant programs, sponsors the creation and presentation of new, diverse cultural activities and special events for the community, provides arts scholarships, and ensures the Charles County's underserved population, people with disabilities, residents with limited income, minorities, and senior citizens have access to the arts. The CCAA builds partnerships with local government, the business community and the educational community, in an effort to enhance the overall quality of life for the citizens of Charles County.
