Arts Alliance "Call for Artists" for the Fall Show

Theme is "Artists Choice"

T he Charles County Arts Alliance is now accepting submissions for the Fall Art Show, a multi-media public exhibit, to be held at the Waldorf West Library, 10405 O'Donnell Place, Waldorf, MD, from September 28 to December 30, 2015. The Library consists of four separate gallery spaces on two floors.  The Charles County Garden Club will create floral interpretations of selected art to be included in the show. 

Local artists are invited to submit a maximum of two works of art on any subject, to the Charles County Arts Alliance for consideration (there is no submission fee). Artwork entries must be submitted electronically as digital images (jpegs) attached to an email sent to waldorfwestgallery@gmail.com.

The email must include:
  • Artist's name
  • Artist's mailing address
  • Artist's email address
  • Artist's phone number
  • Artist's biography (half-page max, in MS-Word)
  • Artist's headshot (jpeg)
  • Title of artwork
  • Medium/materials used
  • Size/dimensions
  • Year created
  • Price, if applicable
Artists who have previously shown in the gallery are invited to submit new work for consideration. Selections will be made by the Gallery Committee and the artists will be notified at a later date in August.

On Saturday, October 3, a "Meet the Artists" Public Reception will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, at the Waldorf West Library's Main Gallery, to honor all the artists participating in the fall show.

The Maryland State Arts Council's annual Individual Artist Award (IAA) recognizes the importance of artists and their works of excellence to the cultural vibrancy of Maryland. Each year, awards of $1,000, $3,000 or $6,000 go to Artists from across Maryland who are selected through an anonymous process by an out-of-state jury on the basis of artistic merit alone. The categories are:

Concessions are available from the Town's food trailer located near the back of the parking lot; an ice cream truck is also stationed there for your enjoyment. Favored by the old masters for its dramatic effects, drypoint is an intaglio printing process (such as etching or engraving), done without the use of acid.  You will draw directly onto a zinc printing plate and will learn how to use hand-inking and wiping techniques.  Making working proofs will help you achieve your final composition.  You may wish to print an edition of your composition at this point, or you can add color to your prints using monotype techniques. For those interested, there will be an opportunity to create cards, either as an edition or as individual monoprints.  To save time, please bring a photograph, or your own design, to use as a basis for your composition. All levels. 

Introduction to the Art of Painting on Silk

Apply the brush to silk once and you are hooked for ever! You will learn the basic silk painting techniques and vocabulary, painting eight technical pieces that you will be able to take home. The techniques taught are stretching, diluting, resisting, spotting, salting, double loading, wet-on-wet, fabric setting and more. There will be an in-depth discussion with many visual samples of hand painted fabrics. Diane is an accomplished silk painter and has co-written several books about this art form. Materials used during the workshop are included in the cost. Bring latex gloves.No art experience is necessary to take this workshop.

The  camp is designed to spark visual intelligence by delving into the rich toolbox of the elements of art and design! Skills will be increased and visual IQ's will soar! All three weeks will be a bit different, and cater to the unique participants' needs. If attending both sessions a day, the student should plan to bring a bag lunch.  A r eception will be held on Friday evenings from 6:30 - 7:30, to display the art work. MAP  is now accepting applications for its fall 2015 IMPACT project at Green Spring Station, located at 10803 Falls Road, Lutherville, MD 21093. This fall, MAP is partnering with Green Spring Station  for an artist or team of artists to create an original temporary  indoor installation comprised of a wide assortment of items from the merchants of Green Spring Station.  The selected artist/artist team will receive a  $1,000  stipend to cover the cost of materials and labor. Installation is scheduled to take place between  October 1 and November 13, 2015 . Green Spring Station will host an opening reception at the site in mid-November.
 
IMPACT is a public art initiative developed to extend Maryland Art Place's programming to broader audiences. Each IMPACT project is unique and developed based on the partnering site. MAP plans to host two to three IMPACT projects over the course of 2015.

July 11:  Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass  by Lewis Carroll.   In 1862 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a shy Oxford mathematician with a stammer, created a story about a little girl tumbling down a rabbit hole. Thus began the immortal adventures of Alice, perhaps the most popular heroine in English literature. Countless scholars have tried to define the charm of the Alice books with those wonderfully eccentric characters such as the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Cheshire Cat, Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter, by proclaiming that they really comprise a satire on language, a political allegory, a parody of Victorian children's literature, even a reflection of contemporary ecclesiastical history. Perhaps, as Dodgson might have said, Alice is no more than a dream, a fairy tale about the trials and tribulations of growing up or down, or all turned round, as seen through the expert eyes of a child.

July 11:   The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan.  

Four mothers, four daughters, four families whose histories shift with the four winds depending on who's "saying" the stories. In 1949, four Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco, begin meeting to eat dim sum, play mahjong, and talk. United in shared unspeakable loss and hope, they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Rather than sink into tragedy, they choose to gather to raise their spirits and money. "To despair was to wish back for something already lost. Or to prolong what was already unbearable." Forty years later the stories and history continue.  With wit and sensitivity, Amy Tan examines the sometimes painful, often tender, and always deep connection between mothers and daughters. As each woman reveals her secrets, trying to unravel the truth about her life, the strings become more tangled, more entwined.

Jam on the Vine:  A Novel by LaShonda Katrice Barnett.  
Ivoe Williams, the precocious daughter of a Muslim cook and a metalsmith from Texas, first ignites her lifelong obsession with journalism when she steals a newspaper from her mother's white employer. After earning a scholarship to the prestigious Willetson College in Austin, and eventually 
settling in Kansas City, she founds the first female-run African American newspaper,  Jam! On the Vine. In the throes of the Red Summer, the 1919 outbreak of lynchings and race riots across the Midwest, Ivoe risks her freedom, and her life, to call attention to the atrocities of segregation in the American prison system.  Jam! On the Vine is both an epic vision of the hardships and injustices that defined an era and a moving and compelling story of a complicated history we only thought we knew.

August 5: The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. T he Ganguli family struggles to transform from their traditio n-bound life in Calcutta into becoming Americans. On the heels of their arranged wedding, Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli settle together in Cambridge, Massachusetts. When their son is born, the task of naming him betrays the vexed results of bringing old ways to the new world. Named for a Russian writer by his Indian parents in memory of a catastrophe years before, Gogol Ganguli knows only that he suffers the burden of his heritage as well as his odd, antic name. About the Charles County Arts Alliance, Inc.

 

The mission of the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) is to stimulate, promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts and the creative spirit.  Founded in 1987, the CCAA promotes ALL the arts in Charles County:  music, visual art, drama, dance and literature.

The CCAA is the official arts council of Charles County and is recognized as such by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) of the State of Maryland.  In this capacity, the CCAA serves as the "umbrella" organization for the arts community in Charles County.  The CCAA promotes Charles County arts organizations and individuals, provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and the schools through its annual arts grant programs, sponsors the creation and presentation of new, diverse cultural activities and special events for the community, provides arts scholarships, and ensures the Charles County's underserved population, people with disabilities, residents with limited income, minorities, and senior citizens have access to the arts. The CCAA builds partnerships with local government, the business community and the educational community, in an effort to enhance the overall quality of life for the citizens of Charles County.
