Arts Alliance "Call for Artists"
for the Spring Art Show at Waldorf West Library

The Charles County Arts Alliance is now accepting submissions for the Spring Art Show, a multi-media public exhibit, to be held at the Waldorf West Library, 10405 O'Donnell Place, Waldorf, MD, from March 30 to June 26, 2015. The Library consists of four separate gallery spaces on two floors.

Local artists are invited to submit a maximum of two works of art on any subject, to the Charles County Arts Alliance for consideration (there is no submission fee). Artwork entries must be submitted electronically as digital images (jpegs) attached to an email sent to waldorfwestgallery@gmail.com.

The email must include:
  • Artist's name
  • Artist's mailing address
  • Artist's email address
  • Artist's phone number
  • Artist's biography (half-page max, in MS-Word)
  • Artist's headshot (jpeg)
  • Title of artwork
  • Medium/materials used
  • Size/dimensions
  • Year created
  • Price, if applicable
Artists who have previously shown in the gallery are invited to submit new work for consideration. Selections will be made by the Gallery Committee and the artists will be notified at a later date in March.

On Saturday, May 2, a "Meet the Artists" Public Reception will be held from 3:00 to 4:30 pm, at the Waldorf West Library's Main Gallery, to honor all the artists participating in the spring show.

2015 Scholarship Program is Now Open!

 

Deadline to Apply is February 28, 2015

 

Each year the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) awards $1,000 scholarships to one outstanding graduating senior from each high school in Charles County and one graduating student from the College of Southern Maryland, who plan to continue studying the arts (performing, visual or literary) at a four-year college or university. 

 

The completed application and all required documentation must be postmarked by noon, February 28, 2015, and mailed to CCAA, PO Box 697, White Plains, MD 20695. For more information, send an email to scholarship.ccaa@gmail.com or click here to go to the CCAA website to download an application.  Charles County Public School Seniors may also see their high schools' College and Career Advisors for a copy of the application.  

 

The Charles County Arts Alliance was founded in 1987 with the goal of stimulating, promoting, encouraging, and providing recognition of the arts and the creative spirit in Charles County, MD. For 28 years, the Arts Alliance has worked toward this goal by providing a variety of events, workshops, and services designed to help Charles County artists and arts organizations succeed and thrive, including:  the ArtsFest countywide festival, school and community grants, and the management of three public art galleries.

The kingdom of Glump has been taxed to abstraction ever since their emperor became a pampered clothes horse with a lack of taste! Not only is he an egotistical hypochondriac, he has three "lovely" daughters who are quickly becoming chips off the old blockhead. The emperor and his family are so busy mismatching their wardrobe, the rest of the kingdom is in a shambles. Enter two con artists who devise an ingenious plan for fleecing the emperor. Their pitch: a magic cloth which appears invisible to people unworthy of their position. Naturally, everyone chooses to "see" the magic cloth, until the innocent candor of a child "reveals all." The emperor is shamed into reforming his leadership role in society, and his spoiled daughters learn a valuable lesson in humility. This workshop will introduce the techniques of this media, which includes beeswax melted to a fluid state on a hot palette and painted, drawn or dripped onto panels. Erin Wiersma's current work explores what exists beyond the edges of the surface, beyond the image itself. In these new drawings she seeks to address the liminal within her work to reconnect with the performance of making, seeking a confluence between the spiritual and material aspects of being. In doing so, she cultivates a sense of mutual seeing and revelation in the process of creating. "What intrigues me in the notion of looking is this gaze, this emotive interaction, between me and the work, the work and the viewer, the viewer and me."  The results are pieces that could be perceived as ganglions of tiny alien veins and capillaries or other micro organic systems, mapping explicit gestures and patterns. Rochester Contemporary Art Center's (RoCo), international art show is coming up in June and is a great opportunity for artists and art lovers of all ages to participate in a unique global exhibition!  All mediums are encouraged and there is no entry fee! The exhibition includes thousands of artworks made and donated by celebrities, international & local artists, designers, college students, youths, and YOU. 

Each artwork must be 6x6 square inches (15cm) or mounted to a 6x6 board, signed only on the back, and exhibited anonymously. All entries will be accepted; exhibited in the gallery and online, and offered for sale to the public for $20 each (in the gallery and online for global purchasing) to benefit RoCo.  Artist names will be revealed to the buyer upon purchase and all artworks remain on display through July 12, 2015. Sold Out artists' names will be revealed next to their work online on July 3. Artists may enter up to 4 artworks of any medium (2D or 3D) and there is no fee to enter. Limit 4 artworks per elementary, middle, or high school.

March 12:  The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kid.  Hetty "Handful" Grimk� , an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The mission of the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) is to stimulate, promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts and the creative spirit.  Founded in 1987, the CCAA promotes ALL the arts in Charles County:  music, visual art, drama, dance and literature.

The CCAA is the official arts council of Charles County and is recognized as such by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) of the State of Maryland.  In this capacity, the CCAA serves as the "umbrella" organization for the arts community in Charles County.  The CCAA promotes Charles County arts organizations and individuals, provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and the schools through its annual arts grant programs, sponsors the creation and presentation of new, diverse cultural activities and special events for the community, provides arts scholarships, and ensures the Charles County's underserved population, people with disabilities, residents with limited income, minorities, and senior citizens have access to the arts. The CCAA builds partnerships with local government, the business community and the educational community, in an effort to enhance the overall quality of life for the citizens of Charles County.
