Arts Alliance is Now Accepting Nominations
for 2017 - 2019 Board of Directors

The Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) wants you!
Deadline to Apply is March 15, 2017
Elections will be Held on Saturday, May 13, 2017

If you are a leader and want to help promote the arts in our county, nominate yourself to serve on the CCAA Board of Directors! CCAA is now accepting self-nominations for the 3 Officers and 9 Directors. The 3 Officers are President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer; all Board positions are volunteer.

Information for Nominations:
  • Self-nominations must be submitted by March 15, 2017.
  • All nominees must be CCAA current members as of January 1, 2017.
  • Please submit a typed, brief written statement indicating:

1) why you are interested in serving on the CCAA Board;

2) what specific contribution(s) you wish to make;
3) your qualifications.
  • Send the written statement (not to exceed one page) to: info@charlescountyarts.org, with the subject line to read: Nomination for CCAA Board of Directors.
Requirements to be on the Board of Directors:
  • Attend monthly Board Meetings (12/year).
  • Attend Board Retreats (2/year for full-day meeting), and participate in CCAA-sponsored cultural and membership events throughout the year.
  • Serve on an active "hands-on" Board, including as a Chair and/or Committee Member.
  • Serve in a volunteer capacity; Board positions are not compensated.
  • Become a CCAA Member at the Silver Circle Level or higher by July 1, 2017.
What can you expect after you self-nominate?
  1. The CCAA will accept all self-nominations via email at info@charlescountyarts.org through the deadline of Wednesday, March 15, 2017.
  2. All nominations will be considered and those nominees being accepted will be notified and will be expected to attend the CCAA Annual Membership Meeting on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Waldorf West Library, 10405 O'Donnell Place, Waldorf, MD.
  3. Nominations will not be accepted from the floor at this meeting.

Arts Scholarships Are Now Available!
Deadline to Apply: March 17, 2017

Each year, the Arts Alliance offers $1000 scholarships to one eligible graduating student from each of the high schools in Charles County. The funds are to be applied toward tuition in a 4-year college or university to advance the education of the student toward a career in the arts. In addition, the Arts Alliance has partnered with the PNC Foundation to award $1000 scholarships to three seniors who meet certain financial requirements.

The Letter E Leaves the Alphabet

The play, based on the children's book by Martha Lane, tells the story of E, who runs away from home because he is not the first letter in the alphabet.

Auditions consist of a recitation from memory of any nursery rhyme and a cold reading.

Roles open for:
          • The Letters E, A, B, C, D (ages 13 to 21 years)
          • The Father (age 40+ years)
          • The Letter Maker (age 40+ years)
          • Also needed: Stage Manager, Projection Technician, and at least one Stage Hand

The play was submitted for the Watermelon Festival competition, and will be performed at ArtsFest on June 10, 2017, at the La Plata Town Hall.

The Charles County Arts Alliance is pleased to announce our 25th annual ArtsFest, to be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017, from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm, on the beautiful grounds of the La Plata Town Hall, in La Plata, Maryland. ArtsFest is the largest arts festival in Charles County, and one of the largest in Southern Maryland. This is our sixth year to present the festival in partnership with the Town of La Plata.

ArtsFest is our annual outdoor celebration of all the arts and artists - visual, literary and performing. It is our "free gift" to the citizens of Charles County and Southern Maryland, and there is no charge for the public to attend. It is a family-friendly, wonderful way to kick off the summer season!  

Visual and literary artists of all media are invited to display and sell their works. In addition, nonprofit arts organizations are invited as exhibitors to display information and encourage participation in their performing, visual and literary arts activities. Also invited as nonprofit exhibitors are cultural, historical, heritage and environmental organizations. Local commercial organizations are also invited to distribute information on their products and services, and a  variety of great good will be available for purchase throughout the day.

Our audience attendance at ArtsFest averages 2000 people each year. At last year's ArtsFest, we presented 12 nonstop music and dance performances on two stages, 60 artists and exhibitors on display, food vendors, and a Kid's Art Tent with a wide variety of hands-on creative projects. This year's ArtsFest promises to be even bigger and better than last year's!

Current members of the Charles County Arts Alliance are invited to submit a maximum of two works of 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional art on any subject for consideration (there is no submission fee). The Behavioral Health Awareness Art Show is one of two exhibitions in Spring 2017 hosted by Maryland's First Lady Yumi Hogan as part of a statewide multi-government agency and community partnership to increase public awareness of the need to de-stigmatize mental illness and addiction. An art form all on its own, drawing with pencil is an excellent way for painters to sharpen their skills on perspective, composition and values.  Explore using graphite to create work that strengthens these themes. Some supplies needed. Note: This workshop will be held at the Maryland Veterans Museum. (Beginning and Intermediate Levels)  

If you wish to take only 1 or 2 of the classes, you may pay the corresponding set fees. (The $10 discount only applies to signing up for all 3 sessions, one week in advance of the first class.)
March 3: Simple drawing techniques, value studies, perspective and composition. Setting up and drawing a still life. $40

(Handcrafted Ukrainian Eggs)

Instructor: Mary Whitmore

Mary Whitmore learned how to make Ukrainian painted eggs at the age of 8 from her Slovenian grandmother. Eggs are made with simple to complex designs using a wax stylus and dyes. Mary will teach simple Easter designs and then convert them to hanging ornaments if preferred.  Painted eggs are traditionally given to friends, neighbors and religious leaders as a symbol for rebirth, resurrection and a good harvest. A $5.00 fee will be paid to the instructor for a Ukrainian egg decorating kit that will include many designs, stylus, wax and dyes to make further eggs as desired. (All levels)

Art making is a way for Ardent to explore our changing relationship with labor. His research focuses on transitions in macroeconomic structures through the lens of their effects on individual lives, communities, and workers' relationships to the structures of labor itself. The artist paid witness to the demise of opportunities to engage in meaningful work and has seen cities ravaged by the absence of industry. Come join in the fun of creating your very own artwork while helping us raise the $7,000 needed to provide the 7 CCAA Arts Scholarships in 2017. Vicki Marckel, CCAA Board Member and art teacher at Henry E. Lackey High School, will lead in painting "Northern Lights."  All supplies are provided and you get to take your masterpiece home!  100% of your donation goes to the CCAA Arts Scholarship Program.

Boston's has also agreed to donate a percentage of your food and beverage (non-alcoholic) purchases made between 4:00 and 9:00 pm, so plan on joining us for dinner, too!

Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, in partnership with the Charles County Art Alliance, is now accepting submissions for their Spring/Summer Art Show, a multi-media exhibit, to be held at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, 29449 Charlotte Hall Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622, from April 20, 2017 to October 18, 2017.  The gallery will be presented along the E-Wing Dining Hallway.   
 
The Crossroads of Hughesville Garden Club will also create floral interpretations of selected art to be included in the show.

March 2:  Travels with Charley in Search of America by John Steinbeck. With Charley, his French poodle, Steinbeck drives the interstates and the country roads, dines with truckers, encounters bears at Yellowstone and old friends in San Francisco. Along the way he reflects on the American character, racial hostility, the particular form of American loneliness he finds almost everywhere, and the unexpected kindness of strangers.

March 4:  The Revenant by Michael Punke. T he year is 1823, and the trappers of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company live a brutal frontier life. Hugh Glass is among the company's finest men, an experienced frontiersman and an expert tracker. But when a scouting mission puts him face-to-face with a grizzly bear, he is viciously mauled and not expected to survive. Two company men are dispatched to stay behind and tend to Glass before he dies. When the men abandon him instead, Glass is driven to survive by one desire: revenge.

March 9:  Sacré Bleu: A Comedy d'Art by Christopher Moore.  P art mystery, part history (sort of), part love story, and wholly hilarious, the story follows a young baker-painter as he joins the dapper Henri Toulouse-Lautrec on a quest to unravel the mystery behind the supposed "suicide" of Vincent van Gogh.

About the Charles County Arts Alliance, Inc.

 

The mission of the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) is to stimulate, promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts and the creative spirit.  Founded in 1987, the CCAA promotes ALL the arts in Charles County:  music, visual art, drama, dance and literature.

The CCAA is the official arts council of Charles County and is recognized as such by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) of the State of Maryland.  In this capacity, the CCAA serves as the "umbrella" organization for the arts community in Charles County.  The CCAA promotes Charles County arts organizations and individuals, provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and the schools through its annual arts grant programs, sponsors the creation and presentation of new, diverse cultural activities and special events for the community, provides arts scholarships, and ensures the Charles County's underserved population, people with disabilities, residents with limited income, minorities, and senior citizens have access to the arts. The CCAA builds partnerships with local government, the business community and the educational community, in an effort to enhance the overall quality of life for the citizens of Charles County.
