Thanks to everyone who joined us last week for CCAHA’s annual Open House. We love having this opportunity each year to invite friends and colleagues into the lab to show them what we’ve been working on. We're already looking forward to the 2019 Open House.
This year's theme was
Stories, Secrets, and Surprises: What Artifacts Tell Us. We focused on the information behind the objects and discussed the kinds of hidden details that are revealed to our staff during the treatment process. Featured artifacts included stunning pieces by Marcel Duchamp, Vincent Van Gogh, and Richard Avedon, as well as fascinating staff presentations on the history of paper, color palettes, and more.

Upcoming Funding Opportunities
Save America’s Treasures
Applications for the latest round of Save America’s Treasures grants are due December 3rd, 2018. Collections of national significance are eligible for conservation treatment services.

Museums for America
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has announced an upcoming deadline for the Museums for America (MFA) grant program. MFA grants support projects that strengthen the ability of an individual museum to serve its public. Projects may be structured at any of several stages: exploratory, piloting, scaling, or mainstreaming.
Deadline: Friday, December 14th

NEH Preservation Assistance Grants
NEH is making some changes to one of its most valued grant categories, NEH Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions. The deadline has been moved forward to January 15th, 2019 (rather than the old mid-May deadline) and there’s a new maximum request limit of $10,000. These grants can be used for many basic collections care needs, including preservation needs assessments, emergency planning, small collection surveys, environmental monitoring, and preservation supplies and equipment. NEH anticipates posting the new guidelines by November 15th.

Documentary Heritage and Preservation Services for New York (DHPSNY) Program Updates
The New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education contracts with CCAHA to deliver statewide services supporting organizations that safeguard New York's historical documents and library research materials.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Caring for modern and contemporary collections is a continually evolving challenge. The 20th and 21st centuries present a vast array of new materials that have left collections staff in uncharted territory as they address unprecedented preservation problems. Colors change and fade, structures lose their integrity, and material components become obsolete. Museums and other collecting institutions must understand the long-term needs of these items in order to determine appropriate priorities for conservation, storage, exhibition, documentation, and digitization. In presentations and curator/conservator conversations, this one-day conference will explore ways to anticipate, plan for, and address preservation concerns in modern and contemporary collections. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience PAFA galleries of contemporary American art.

Integrated Pest Management for Cultural Institutions

Integrated Pest Management plans are an integral, yet often overlooked, core collections policy. In this one-and-a-half-day workshop of presentations and practical exercises, speakers will discuss the elements of an Integrated Pest Management plan, strategies for identifying and monitoring common pests, treatments appropriate for collections objects, and common hazards staff may face when addressing pests in their collections. Attendees will leave the conference with the tools to tackle pests and safeguard their collections.

In 2016, CCAHA and LYRASIS partnered to increase their constituents’ access to vital services. CCAHA members receive a discount on LYRASIS programming. In addition, the organizations offer combined consulting for cultural heritage organizations.

The
Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA)
is a nonprofit conservation facility specializing in the treatment of works on paper, photographs, and books through conservation and state-of-the-art digital imaging services. Founded in 1977, CCAHA serves collecting institutions and private individuals. CCAHA’s preservation services staff present educational programs, conduct preservation assessments, and develop emergency preparedness plans. CCAHA also offers fellowships, fundraising support, and disaster assistance.
