The Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc. seeks a Managing Attorney for its Cobb County office. The office is a branch of Atlanta Legal Aid, a 75-lawyer non-profit law firm for low income persons with civil legal problems in the 5-country metropolitan Atlanta area. The Cobb office is housed in downtown Marietta, within walking distance to the courthouse. The staff is comprised of a managing attorney, 6 full time attorneys, a pro bono director, one part-time attorney, a Hispanic outreach paralegal, and four support staff members. Attorneys in the Cobb office represent low-income persons in a wide variety of civil law problems, using a variety of methods, including community education, brief service, advice and referral, transactional work, negotiation, mediation, and litigation. The attorneys handle a mixed caseload, including domestic relations, housing, consumer, employment, health, public benefits, and education law issues. Attorneys provide community education to low-income persons and are encouraged to participate in local bar and social service associations. Duties: The managing attorney is responsible for the overall management, quality and efficacy of the office. They supervise the legal work of all unit staff; hold staff meetings, administer performance reviews, distribute work, and foster growth and professional development. The managing attorney serves as a primary representative of Legal Aid in the Cobb community, and maintains effective relations with the local bar and bench, government, community organizations, and funding sources. The Managing Attorney will supervise staff, and work closely with management team members to coordinate client services. The Managing Attorney is expected to handle an active caseload Qualifications: The ideal candidate possesses experience managing a work unit as well as supervising and mentoring attorneys; excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills; excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; the ability to work in and value a collaborative team model; and an appreciation of diversity. A Georgia bar license or eligibility for the next Georgia bar exam is required, as is a minimum of five years of legal experience and experience litigating in various legal forums. Qualifications preferred include previous work with low income persons, and knowledge in various practice areas within civil legal services. Proficiency in languages other than English is highly valued. Salary and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes a $4,000 manager stipend. A managing attorney with five years of legal experience starts at $64,100. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, vacation, sick, and paid parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $7200 per year (after a $65 per month deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match; CLE expenses; and Georgia Bar dues.

The candidate will be responsible for assisting busy trust and estates law practice with all aspects of estate planning, probate matters, and trust administration work. BA/BS, or Paralegal Certification from an ABA approved program, with 1-4 years of related experience are required.
The candidate will work closely with firm clients and attorney. Responsibilities will include researching and drafting deeds, trust transfer deeds, and other trust supporting documents; as well as drafting probate pleadings. Probate Court practice responsibilities include: Reading Wills and trust instruments; prepare and file all documents required to probate wills; prepare receipt and release agreements, disclaimers, affidavits, accounting petitions; handle issuance and revocation of letters and other miscellaneous proceedings, including preparation of petitions and overseeing service on interested parties. Familiarity with local court rules and procedures is essential. Should be proficient with MS Word, Excel, Office, Adobe, and Publisher. Experience in trust, estate or probate administration preferred. The candidate should have excellent communication skills and possess excellent writing and research skills.

The candidate will be responsible for assisting busy trust and estates law practice with client relations, and serving as the administrative contact for the firm. The candidate responsibilities will include: greeting clients and visitors and answering visitor inquiries; answering incoming calls; scheduling and routing client and attorney calls appropriately; scheduling and confirming client meetings; preparing initial client meeting documents and pre-meeting mailings; ordering supplies; scanning, photocopying, faxing and filing documents; collecting and routing mail and hand-delivered packages; and data entry, word processing, establishing new matter files and drafting template correspondence.
Candidate must possess excellent interpersonal and customer service skills as this position will be initial point of contact with firm for clients, opposing counsel, vendors, and others.
