Updates from the Christian Conference Center in Newton, Iowa March 2026

2026 Year of Development

As we step into 2026, the CCC is dedicating this year to development, focusing on three key areas for our beloved holy ground: building more relationships, growing our volunteer base, and increasing donor support. Development is vital to ensuring our continued success. To grow relationships, my family and I have been visiting congregations across the region—more than 20 since April—strengthening existing connections, forming new ones, and sharing updates about the CCC. Volunteer development is another priority, and new this year we’ve launched “Fix It Fridays,” a weekly volunteer day with a list of projects for all seasons and skill sets. We’ve already had at least one volunteer every Friday since the start of the year, working on everything from hands-on repairs to office organization, helping us complete projects more efficiently. Anyone interested in joining can reach me at eric@newtonccc.org or call the CCC at 641-792-1266; lunch and community are always included. Our final focus is creating a sustainable financial plan by partnering with monthly donors to keep investing in our facility for the future. As a non-profit, this consistent support is essential, since most organizations rely on a small percentage of donors for a large portion of their funding.

Mid-Year Retreats and 2026 Camp Dates

The CCC was able to host two mid-year retreats for the youth so far this year. The first event was January 23rd-25th and this hosted the Chi Rho and CYF group. This event was led by our Upper Midwest Youth Council (UMwYC) for our 6th-12th graders. This event was a true blessing to witness as we had the laughter and chatter back of young voices filling the facility with camp vibes. This event had 15 adult volunteers and 46 youth that made the most of their time together from Friday evening to Sunday morning. The group of UMwYC leaders led worship each night and Sunday morning giving parts of their faith stories. The youth led the music, prayers, messages and expectations for how they wanted to worship God together. The relationships we witnessed both new and old were inspiring and left all present yearning for camp season.

Junior retreat was held February 20th-22nd at the CCC being led by Anika McVay (Burlington CC) and Molly Goodrich (Oskaloosa CC). These two individuals did a splendid job of creating an action-packed weekend for our elementary youth. They focused on the story of Jonah and had several creative ways for the youth to interact with the scripture. Interact they sure did through building parts of the story out of random supplies given to them with little direction other than you must use everything. The creativity was pure joy to witness. They saw an interactive movie one evening that they had specific instructions when certain things happened in the movie that might have even allowed them to throw some popcorn at the movie screen. A little clean up afterward and all were entertained. They interacted with each other in a service project that was full of fun. They worked to unpack our new pillows placing each in their protective covering as we begin to supply bedding for all of our lodging areas including our cabins. The kids were able to unpack, cover and stack the pillows to completion with a few pillow fights along the way. I think you can see the pride in the photo on the right of the completed project. Stacking may have been the most fun part. This event saw 25 youth and 15 adults live and worship in community. If this sounds like fun to you or someone you know then camp is a place they need to be in 2026. Registration is open and dates are listed. Register early to guarantee your spot in the wilderness this summer as we learn more about God and finding our place in the world. Register at uppermidwestcc.org under Camp Program; select summer camp; and then click on the "registration is open" link. Questions with registration contact Lisa Grace at office@uppermidwestcc.org or at 515-255-3168.

Remembering the Why?

Several years ago Marcia and I went to Grandcamp for the 6th time. That time we were with 2 of our grandsons. They had a wonderful experience. They shoveled dirt, drove nails and watched the first walls being raised for the new cabins. The Conference Center is truly holy ground is so many ways, both expected and unexpected. I can’t encourage everyone enough to attend; grandparent, uncle, aunt, etc. I can promise each and everyone of you that you will never regret attending.

The most moving moment for me came at the wiener roast the first night. I traded hello’s with a gentlemen sitting across the table from me. I wasn't expecting much more than that, but he went on to tell me that he had been battling cancer for over 12 years. I started to express my sympathy, but he said that it had been such a blessing for him. His faith in God and his fellow man had grown tremendously. He had seen a doctor, nurse or other health care provider at least once every other week for all of those years. He treasured every single day that he had with them, his family and his friends, new and old. He treasured life but does not fear death, nor should we as our Lord and savior Jesus Christ died on the cross to wash away our sins and give us ever lasting life.

God Bless,

Jim Gossett

2026 Fix It Friday's

Looking for a quick way to get involved with continued progress here at the CCC? New this year every Friday is volunteer Friday, and we are excited to gather in community to help move the project list closer towards completion. This is a great way to gather will fellow conference center people and help make a huge impact on our facility. It is through these days that we can tackle some of our larger projects both inside and outside. Contact Eric for more details eric@newtonccc.org or 641-792-1266.

Monroe Scout Group Onsite

Monroe scouts came out for a weekend retreat and had an amazing time here on holy ground. The group helped us paint cabinets, remove carpet from the program closet, hang drywall in our new camp store expansion. They experienced quality time together building relationships through work, play, and meals. This group has enjoyed their time so much at the CCC that they have booked and entire week this summer for their scout camp in our rustic area. They plan to have the youth pitch tents and use a village or two for campsites. They also will be using McKee as their director base as well as meal prep and storm shelter options. It is great to see how so many people experience this holy ground in different ways. We are thankful for our continued partnerships with Monroe scouts and look forward to helping build more memories together for all.

2026 Projects at CCC

Volunteer Projects

2026 has been off to a fast start with projects. We are preparing a new expanded camp store this year that will bring some fan favorites. This year the camp store will have additional items available for sale during select times during each camp. These offerings will include our fan favorites of popcorn, snow cones, and new this year soft serve ice cream available in a dish or cone and three flavors chocolate, vanilla or the ever-popular twist. We excited to offer these items along with cold drinks that seem to be requested each summer. We have listened to what the people want and found a way to help deliver more choices in 2026. We have continued work on our shake replacement of the old part of the lodge and have only two sides remaining. Other priorities to get to work on as the weather continues to improve includes relocating the Adam Barnett memorial welcome sign at the main entrance, Chi Rho shelter house repairs in memory of Amanda Wakelin to all be completed before camp is set to start the first week of June.
