Pope Francis proclaimed 2025 a Jubilee Year with the theme, Pilgrims of Hope. In line with ancient tradition, the Catholic Church proclaims a Jubilee every 25 years to increase opportunities to experience God’s grace. The pope inaugurated the Jubilee Year at the Vatican on Dec. 24, 2024, with the opening of the Holy Door of the Basilica of Saint Peter. The Jubilee will conclude with the closing of the Holy Door at the Basilica of Saint Peter on Jan. 6, 2026, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.

Pope Francis stated in his letter announcing the Jubilee 2025: "We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart, and far-sighted vision. The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire."
