Dear Colleagues,

Happy winter holidays! As we near the halfway point of the school year, I hope you can take time over this well-deserved break to reflect on and appreciate all that has been accomplished so far this year.

I have had the opportunity to visit several school districts this fall and have seen the wonderful work happening around reading instruction. It reminded me of what Kylene Beers wrote in her book, When Kids Can’t Read, What Teachers Can Do

“Teaching reading to adolescents is both rewarding and frustrating; it’s a science and an art. It’s making mistakes and growing from them. It’s the most important thing I do as a teacher.” (Beers, 2003)

As someone who used to teach reading, I cannot agree more with that statement. Our Ed Services team is developing professional development programming and rolling it out within the next year as part of the ARISE (Accelerating Reading Intervention for System Excellence) grant our agency was recently awarded by the California Department of Education. Keep an eye out for that on our website cocoschools.org and in these monthly newsletters.

Among all the things happening between now and the beginning of the new year, December 28 is National Call a Friend Day. Studies show that connecting with people by phone can improve mental health, improve social bonds and deter the feelings of isolation. We spend a lot of time helping students with their social-emotional well-being and mental health, it is easy to forget the adults in their lives may also feel stressed and overwhelmed and reconnecting with loved ones could be what they need.

There are still many professional development and educational opportunities taking place this month before the break and after the new year. I hope you have a moment to look at the newsletter below and see if there is anything that might be of interest to you.

Have a wonderful holiday and a happy new year!

With Gratitude,

Lynn Mackey
