Contra Costa County Library News

The Contra Costa County Library is piloting a new program designed to give patrons access to the Concord Library on Sundays when the branch is normally closed. Patrons who sign up for the service in advance can enter the Concord Library between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sundays beginning December 1. There will not be any staff on site, but two security guards will be present to ensure that only patrons who have signed up for the service are entering the library.
Patrons can browse the collection and check out books, return items, pick up holds, connect to Wi-Fi, and use the space for studying or reading. To sign up for the service, patrons must have a library card in good standing, a valid ID, attend an in-person orientation and sign the user agreement. Approved patrons will scan their library card at the door and use a unique PIN code to enter. More information is available at ccclib.org/self-service-Sundays.
Happy Birthday to the Rolling Reader
The Library’s early literacy outreach van, the Rolling Reader, is celebrating its first birthday this month. The van and outreach team had a very busy first year connecting with 12,950 people, handing out 7,068 books and driving 6,273 miles. The Rolling Reader visits underserved communities across the county where library staff present storytimes, hand out free books and crafts, and provide activities focused on early literacy, small motor skills, and STEM.

Bay Area All-Star Scholarship Team (BAASST)
Scholarship opportunity for Bay Area college bound high school seniors called Bay Area All-Star Scholarship Team (BAASST). Since its inception in 1996, the Golden State Warriors in partnership with other Bay Area professional sports teams has awarded Bay Area students with scholarships through the BAASST program. Each Bay Area team has the honor of selecting one deserving student each year to receive a BAASST scholarship to support their pursuit of higher education. This year, the Golden State Warriors will select one extraordinary student from the Contra Costa or San Mateo County.

California National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification Incentive Award
The California National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Candidate Subsidy second round application window is live. The 2024–25 NBPTS Candidate Subsidy Application opened September 3, 2024. This application is for new and continuing teachers in the process of pursuing a certification from NBPTS when teaching at a school on the Eligible High-Priority Schools List after July 1, 2024. The second application window opens November 7 through January 10, 2025, at 4 p.m. Candidates who teach at least 50 percent of the time in a high-priority school are eligible for the $2,500 subsidy award. A high-priority school is defined as one with 55 percent or more of its pupils (unduplicated) classified as English learners, foster youth, or eligible for free or reduced-price meals. The California Coastal Commission Offers TWO Student Contests

California students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to submit artwork or poetry with a California coastal or marine theme to the Coastal Art & Poetry Contest, presented by the California Coastal Commission.

All California educators are invited to attend monthly one-hour “Trending Tuesdays” virtual professional learning sessions, held on Tuesdays between 4–5 p.m. Sessions are led by content leadership teams and partners to explore topics impacting the implementation of mathematics, science, and computer science education.
