No Time to Waste celebrates legendary 98-year-old park ranger Betty Reid Soskin's inspiring life, work and urgent mission to restore critical missing chapters of America’s story. The film follows her journey as an African American woman presenting her personal story from a kitchen stool in a national park theater to media interviews and international audiences who hang on every word she utters.

The documentary captures her fascinating life -- from the experiences of a young Black woman in a WWII segregated union hall, through her multi-faceted career as a singer, activist, mother, legislative representative and park planner to her present public role.

The Impact of Trauma at School

The CDE Diagnostic Center, Northern California will offer a free session about the impact of trauma on student capacity. Learn the signs and symptoms to look for when screening students for trauma-related problems and assessment tips to help determine the extent to which a particular student's difficulties in school are likely related to traumatic experiences. A brief overview of evidence-based strategies to address trauma through school-based mental health services is also included, along with resources to assist in service planning.

Introduction to Concussions

The CDE Diagnostic Center, Northern California will offer a two-part training on concussions. The first session will identify concussion symptoms and considerations for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) assessment in special education. Participants in the second webinar on February 23 will then learn how to brainstorm teams for school re-entry following concussions, access materials for monitoring and accommodating concussions, and understand the continuum of informal accommodations.

Scholastic Journalism Week 2023

Apply to be featured on the Journalism Education Association (JEA) Twitter during Scholastic Journalism Week. This year’s theme is “More to the story.” Our classrooms are filled with storytellers able to put words together like poetry or photograph an event like a work of art. Their videography skills rivals those in Los Angeles and their design skills are on the level of magazines published in New York. With all the skills students possess, one of them must be their ability to find a story, dig for information and, above all, report the news.

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Training

YMHFA teaches participants to identify, understand, and respond to youth, ages 6-18, who may experiencing emotional distress, mental illness or a substance use issue. This training gives adults the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support and help connect them with appropriate and timely care.

Training Prerequisites: Participants must complete 2 hours of self-paced online instruction prior to the live virtual instructor-led training.

Calling All Artists Ages 6-17!

The Free Comic Book Days Bookmark Contest is back. The theme: Draw yourself as a superhero or a supervillain. You can submit your artwork online at ccclib.org or pick up a paper submission form at your local library. Contest runs from Feb 1 - 28. Finalists' artwork will be printed as a bookmark and handed out at all 26 Contra Costa County Library branches.

Kindergarten Countdown is a program for children entering kindergarten in the fall. The activities are designed to help children practice and learn skills that will ease the transition into kindergarten. Kids to Parks Day School Grant Program (Apply by February 17, 2023)

National Park Trust is offering funding to Title 1 Classrooms in TK-12th grade in order to increase student access to national parks and outdoor educational experiences.  Receive up to $500 in grant funding for distance learning and up to $1,000 for field trips.

CDE, California Student Aid Commission, and Golden State Warriors Community Foundation Team Up for “All in for FAFSA/CA Dream Act” Campaign

Don’t miss your shot! The CDE, the Golden State Warriors Community Foundation, and the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) have teamed up to speak on the importance of students applying for financial aid with the “All in for FAFSA/CA Dream Act” campaign. The goal of the campaign is to expand access to financial aid to thousands of students who may not have otherwise been aware of these opportunities. The CSAC has created an “All In” landing page where students, families, and educators will find various financial aid resources, including flyers, posters, checklists, postcards, and more. Recent events can be tough on children’s overall mental wellness and make access to resources even more important. Supporting the Annual Directing Change Program Student Film Contest

This statewide program invites California students from grades six through twelve to create 60-second films about suicide prevention, mental health, and other health-related topics to support awareness, education, and advocacy. Film submissions are due at midnight on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

Free Online Homework Help

The California State Library provides free online tutoring for California K-12 students, available through public libraries. Through HelpNow, live real-time homework assistance is available 24 hours a day by laptop, tablet, or phone from qualified tutors using state curriculum and standards. Live tutors fluent in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Tagalog are available from 10am to 10p., 7 days a week. Additionally, HelpNow features AI translation allowing tutors and students to communicate in nearly any language.

K–12 Online Content Project Adds PBS Video Collection

California public school students and educators now have access to over 1,200 streaming PBS videos covering topics in science, history, current events, music, and drama. The PBS Video Collection (Fourth Edition) from ProQuest, part of the Clarivate company, is the latest addition to the K–12 Online Content Project, a partnership between the California State Library and the Riverside County Office of Education for school library content and tools.
