Is It Okay to Cheat to Win?
by Brenda Willis
For whatever reason, you and your Republican friend, relative, voter, etc. don’t see eye-to-eye. This is completely understandable. However, you’re forced to “play nice” with these folks!

It may seem pretty difficult to find common ground with a person like this but that is what I recently did when I got into it with my mother-in-law (MIL) at dinner. I think my response might have gotten to her – she changed the subject.

MIL: “Why is everyone so “up in arms” about Russia? They didn’t have any influence on my vote on Trump. What’s wrong with getting information?   Common ground - She and I both like baseball, so I said:

Me: “ Say you and I are on opposing teams in the world series championship game. Before the game, my team manager spoke to someone that made it known that he: a) has never played baseball, b) has no love of baseball, and c) actually might like to do away with baseball.

This baseball hater is very willing to give my team some info (that may or may not be true) to help my team win. Oh, by the way, we can pay back the favor some other way, sometime in the future.

You, (MIL), as the opposing team, would be upset, right? Like…. who is this guy?  It is NOT okay to cheat to win .  This guy is not playing fair! It’s un-American!

We play the game as scheduled and my team wins – was it because of the information my team got? It’s unclear.

In the meantime, baseball players/fans are alerted to the fact that my team manager had that talk with that rather shady baseball hater. They are furious that someone who doesn’t love baseball was INVITED to come in and intentionally influence (corrupt?) the game.

And well…I’m just a little ole player on the team that won and I feel kind of weird about it. But we got the win, so I’m willing to overlook it.

The bigger picture – baseball/America is now open to outside influencers that we’re pretty sure don’t wish us well.  It is no longer our game!

Take Action: call your U.S. Congressman and/or Senator:

  • US House District 3: Van Taylor (Plano) 972-202-4150
  • US House District 4: John Ratcliffe (Rockwall) 972-771-0100
  • US House District 32: Colin Allred (Dallas) 972-972-7949
  • US Senior Senator: John Cornyn (Plano) 972-239-1310
  • US Junior Senator: Ted Cruz (Dallas) 214-599-8749

Say (example):  I would like {fill in name of Congressman or Senator} to vote in favor of impeachment. The President has betrayed our Country by asking another country to investigate an American citizen(s) for the President’s political gain. Our elections can never be fair with outside influence!

We’re Hiring Polling Place Workers!
The 2020 Collin County Democratic Primary is shaping up to be the largest ever, both in numbers of candidates and numbers of voters. To serve those voters, we need the largest ever numbers of people working in our polling places. These are paid positions. Pay ranges from $10 to $12 per hour , depending on your role and the day.

We need to staff 35 Early Voting locations February 18th-28th (including the February 22nd-23rd weekend) and 63 locations on Election Day, March 3rd . We are particularly in need of folks who can step up to serve as polling place Judges or Alternate Judges on March 3rd.

If you can take a day off work or are otherwise available, please contact the Collin County Democratic Party Primary Administration team at 469-609-0539 or   elections@collindemocrats.org . Our Judge and Alternate Judge appointment list needs to be completed by December 11, so please contact us right away.
Election Administration Volunteers Needed
Would you like to be engaged in the coming record-breaking Collin County Democratic Primary? We need volunteers who will work with party staff in administering the March 3 Primary and May 26 Runoff Elections . Activities will include recruiting election workers, processing candidate filing petitions, double-checking ballot proofs, scheduling training, answering questions from workers and voters, supporting the district or county conventions and a myriad of other tasks.

Please respond if you can contribute 2 or 20 hours per week (or anything in between). Particularly welcome will be people who can be “on call” for peak workloads, such as receipt of multiple candidate petitions or quick turnaround ballot proofing.

Work will begin this November and continue through June of 2020.

Election administration volunteers may also become paid polling place workers when voting is underway. Volunteers may get preference for some of the better 2020 polling place assignments as well as build qualifications for applying for paid administration work in the 2022 or future cycles.

If you can serve or have questions, please contact party elections administration at elections@collindemocrats.org .

Yes, We Can Talk Politics
Drinking Liberally and Living Liberally are informal, inclusive progressive social groups. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics.

While drinking liberally, always remember to drink responsibly, and make liberal use of designated drivers. Drinking and driving is reckless and irresponsible, like a neocon war or corporatist tax cut. Liberals, don't do it!
