The new center will be built opposite the current Government Center, and after completion, the old Government Center will be demolished. The expected completion date of the new center is June 2026 while demolition of the current Government Center tower will be in February 2027.
“This is going to be the most significant investment in a capital investment piece in Columbus, in the history of Columbus, Georgia. So, we really have a lot of momentum right now,” said Mayor Henderson.
City Manager, Isaiah Hugley, took this notion of the strong momentum even further to talk about other major happenings in our area. He made the following remarks at the Judicial Center groundbreaking ceremony: “With this groundbreaking ceremony today, we move one more step towards a safer transformative future in Columbus, Georgia!
As City Manager I am proud of our progress throughout our city.
What is happening in Columbus is starting to happen quickly. Some may doubt it, but Columbus is a success story in the making:
A new Judicial Center here, a new City Hall down the street, new restaurants over there, and up the street, a new Oglethorpe Bridge down the street, new interchanges under construction, a streetscape project in the Liberty District at the Liberty Theatre, and many streets throughout South Columbus, Roundabouts, roads being resurfaced, AA Braves Baseball, Economic Development projects, including Economic Development Projects coming to South Columbus.
We’re spending more than $1.1 billion on infrastructure projects over the next 10 years. Many more projects and improvements in process.
It all begins to add up. The 29th best Run City in America. Listed as one of 14 most beautiful cities in Georgia. Our momentum is strong. Columbus, Georgia is a success story in the making.
So, I’m happy today. This Judicial Center groundbreaking is historic. It is the single most expensive city government project in Columbus, Georgia history. Thank you to the citizens of Columbus for saying yes to the SPLOST that makes this day possible. Thank you, mayor, council, and city staff, for making Columbus a success story in the making. Our momentum is strong! “
