May is National Water Safety Month! Water Safety Month is a joint effort of the World Waterpark Association, the American Red Cross, the National Recreation and Park Association and the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance. These organizations represent businesses and other individuals and agencies involved in bringing safe, enjoyable aquatic activities to the American public, from pools at home, water parks and resorts, to public swimming and other water recreation facilities.

Water Safety 101:

  •  Always supervise children in and around the water. Designate at least one adult to always watch the water.
  •  Never swim alone. Swimming is safer and more fun with a buddy.
  •  Don’t dive or jump into water that you can’t see through. Obstacles like rocks and stumps may be hiding under the surface.
  •  Never turn your back to the ocean. Big surf and strong riptides can come without warning.
  • Don’t depend on floating toys to keep you safe. Inner tubes, water wings, and other inflatables are not safe substitutes for life jackets.
  •  Children and non-swimmers should ALWAYS wear life jackets in open water. Life jackets only work if you wear them!
  •  Don’t prolong the time you hold your breath underwater. Holding your breath longer than necessary underwater can result in a loss of consciousness and lead to drowning.
  • Swim only in designated swim areas. Signs are posted for a reason! There may be dangers in non-designated swim areas.
  •  Don’t leave toys or other floatables in an unsupervised pool. Floating toys can attract children.
  •  Learn to swim. Contact Parks and Recreation, 706-225-4658 for information on swim lessons.
