Open Letter from Our CEO to the Community, An Important Message for Anyone who has lost their health insurance. In addition to the thousands of people losing their jobs due to COVID-19, many are also losing their health insurance.

There is no-cost health coverage that members of the community may be eligible for: Medi-Cal. CenCal Health administers the Medi-Cal program in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

Like Unemployment, Social Security, and Disability Insurance, Medi-Cal is one of America’s vital safety-net programs. Medi-Cal is a public program for adults and children who meet eligibility requirements. The program provides comprehensive coverage for medical, dental, and vision care services, including check-ups, immunizations, mental health, prescription drugs, testing, and treatment for COVID-19 (the coronavirus), hospitalization, and much more.

Currently, 1 in 4 residents of Santa Barbara County and 1 in 5 residents in San Luis Obispo County receive their health and vision benefits through CenCal Health. We are the health plan that provides medical coverage for Medi-Cal beneficiaries in both counties.

One day, things will return to normal and everyone can go back to living their lives as before. However, until then, we are here for those who may need us and some peace of mind.

Sincerely,
Bob Freeman
CEO, CenCal Health

COVID-19 Update: Healthcare That Works Remotely

CenCal Health is offering alternatives for healthcare access in order to support our members during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing necessary treatment at no cost to our members and reducing barriers to care. We have been working with our network physicians and other providers to ensure members have access to medication and medical consultations in the safety of their homes.

For those that need to speak with a medical expert, there is an option available: telemedicine . This service allows patients and providers to keep appointments by using telecommunication technology, like phone or video. Many primary care and mental health providers have already added telemedicine visits to their own practices.

“Many of our physicians have started or expanded telemedicine programs so that members can see their doctor through a live video visit,” said CenCal Health’s Chief Medical Officer  Dr.Farid Hassanpour . “Other physicians have made special arrangements so that children can get their important vaccinations on schedule, without fear of sitting in a waiting room with sick patients.”

We are providing members with new medication delivery options. Members can transfer their prescriptions to  SortPak Rx, a mail-order service at no cost to members that includes automatic refills, or they can choose local pharmacies offering home delivery. A list of pharmacies that offer home delivery services is available  here . We are allowing members to receive an extra 90-day supply of most non-narcotic, maintenance medications , with limited exceptions requiring prior approval. It is not necessary to change pharmacies in order to obtain the additional supply.

Reliable information is available to all of our members by phone through the  Nurse-Advice Line . Members can consult with a nurse any day, 24/7, free of charge – especially helpful after normal business hours and on weekends when most doctors’ offices are closed. To reach the Nurse-Advice Line, members can dial (800) 524-5222.

As a response to the novel coronavirus, we have included a new web page containing member-focused guidance related to COVID-19 concerns. Anyone can access this information, which is available in English and Spanish, here.

In March, we released our 2019 Annual Community Report that demonstrates our mission and vision, programs and projects, achievements, leadership, and financial information in a multi-media format.

Our online Community Report features the first ever San Luis Obispo Safety Net Tour, designed to allow health care providers, leaders of community-based organizations, local legislators, and other stakeholders in San Luis Obispo County to “walk a day in the life of a Medi-Cal recipient.” This tour gave participants an opportunity to look at the safety net health system from a Medi-Cal recipient’s perspective, providing a deeper understanding of the barriers and challenges people face when they are trying to receive care.
