Welcome, CCI's New Senior Program Officer, AmbitioUS !

Andrea Yarbrough (she/her) is a social practice artist, cultural worker, and organizer born and raised on Chicago’s South Side. She stewards the creative placekeeping initiative in c/o: Black women, which advances a Black feminist praxis of creating sites of care through witnessing, relationship-building, and collective action. Her practice transforms everyday materials into art objects while creating spaces for care, connection, and collective imagining.

Before joining CCI as Senior Program Officer, AmbitioUS, Andrea spent more than a decade working across nonprofit and higher education institutions, providing technical assistance to small business owners and nonprofit leaders, supporting high school students and adults interested in the arts, and helping build pathways toward sustainable careers. She holds an M.A. in Museum and Exhibition Studies from the University of Illinois Chicago.

Andrea is a worker-owner at Cooperation Racine, where she supports cultural workers on Chicago’s South Side. She also serves on the board of Crossroads Fund and is a member of the core organizing team of the Chicago Black Voter Project. In her free time, you can find her foraging in an urban garden or at a local hot yoga studio.

Op-Ed by Angie Kim: What Funders Get Wrong About Investing in Democracy

Every two years as election season approaches, we sound the alarm about the state of our democracy. In “What Funders Get Wrong About Investing in Democracy,” a new op-ed in Nonprofit Quarterly, CCI President & CEO Angie Kim challenges philanthropy’s treatment of pro-democracy funding and community investment as an either/or choice. Drawing on new research and her firsthand account of the regression that followed the post-2020 funding surge, she makes the case for investing in long-term, community-fueled solutions — and offers three concrete places for funders to start.
