Sept. 20, 2026: Spiritual Clutter by Rev. Doti Boon. I was cleaning my office and ran across a backpack that I used in 1987. It had gum, Roll-aids, a bus token, and loads of receipts stuffed into one small pocket. Why? I asked myself: was I holding on to all of that junk
After sorting and putting things into the To Go, Throw Away, or Keep piles, I realized our lives are pretty much like that. However, instead of “things,” we often treat ideas, philosophies, and even our faith in much the same way.
We all accumulate stuff...spiritual junk...some good stuff, some we need to toss, and other thoughts and ideas we aren’t too sure about – so we put them back in our mental and emotional drawers to be dealt with later.
Our lives become a virtual storage container of unfinished thoughts, incomplete projects, and sometimes dangerous stuff. Old ideas, harmful prejudices, and even downright lies interact and amplify each other! We get a surplus of negative views and unsubstantiated junk from television, Facebook, and even our friends and family.
So, at the end of each day, we have more and more negative accumulations. This clutter happens through a gradual accumulation of seemingly harmless bits and pieces, like old gum, receipts, and bus tokens. Sometimes it could be rules, rituals, and even religion, things that are supposed to keep us safe…but don’t. We unconsciously gather together ideas that are not spiritually profitable for ourselves or anybody else.
