November 2025

CCLA, the Florida Health Justice Project (FHJP), and Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law joined together for a powerful roundtable discussion on public benefits and the challenges facing our community

Opening Statement From CCLA's Executive Director, Lisa Goldberg

Dear Friends,

This November, National Family Caregivers Month, Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA) honors caregivers, the quiet heroes who give tirelessly of themselves for loved ones.

CCLA's legal services support caregivers aged 18 and older caring for a senior (age 60+) meeting frailty requirements as well as grandparents and relative caregivers (age 55+) raising minor children. From health and public benefits to housing and foreclosure defense, from domestic violence and financial exploitation to consumer protections, CCLA works to lift the legal burdens that weigh so heavily on caregivers. Caregivers like Roseanne.

Roseanne, a grandmother raising her two young grandchildren, wakes before sunrise each day to prepare meals, coordinate school activities, and care for her husband’s medical needs. Like thousands of family caregivers in our community, she navigates a web of challenges—healthcare decisions, public benefits, housing concerns, and even financial exploitation. She was often without support and guidance until CCLA's Senior Citizen Law Project stepped in to help her navigate the care of her family.

Family caregivers give so much, often at great personal sacrifice. This month, we celebrate their resilience, their compassion, and their steadfast commitment to family. CCLA stands beside them with the legal support, guidance, and protections they need to continue their vital work with confidence and security.

The month is also National Long-Term Care Awareness Month — a time to recognize the importance of planning for the future and safeguarding the rights of older adults. At CCLA, we know that long-term care planning is not only about medical needs but also about ensuring seniors have the legal tools to protect their independence and dignity.

Through our Advanced Directives workshops and pro bono clinics, CCLA provides low-income seniors with critical guidance on their legal rights, helping them understand and complete the proper documents to ensure their wishes are respected. These workshops empower seniors to make informed decisions about their health care and long-term care, giving them and their families peace of mind.

As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to CCLA's friends, supporters, and donors for their kindness and generosity. Your support ensures that no one in our community faces life’s challenges alone and that everyone lives with safety, security and dignity.

With gratitude,

November is National Family Caregivers Month

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize and honor the extraordinary individuals who devote themselves to the care of loved ones. Their steadfast commitment, compassion, and resilience form the foundation of strong families and vibrant communities. Caregivers embody grace under pressure—balancing daily responsibilities with profound empathy and quiet strength.

CCLA joins the national caregiving community in honoring the unsung heroes who give tirelessly of themselves to care for others. Through our Senior Citizen Law Project, our legal services assist caregivers aged 18 and older who care for a senior (60+) as well as grandparent and relative caregivers (55+) raising minor children in their homes.

Together, we bring hope, stability, and justice to those who give so much of themselves in the service of others.

Meet our Client: Mayra

When Mayra moved in with her aging mother to help care for her after a stroke, she never imagined she’d soon be facing eviction. As her mother’s full-time caregiver, Mayra had given up her job to ensure her mother received the daily care she needed — from preparing meals to managing medications to helping her walk again.

But when their landlord sold the property, Mayra and her mother received an eviction notice. With limited income and few options, Mayra felt helpless. Her mother’s health depended on stability, yet they had nowhere to go.

“CCLA was the answer to my prayers,” Mayra said. “They didn’t just protect our home — they gave us hope.”

Today, Mayra’s mother continues to recover in a safe, stable home. Mayra says she’s learned that asking for help is part of caring too.

Each day, caregivers like Mayra give their hearts to their loved ones — and CCLA is proud to provide the legal support they need to keep their families safe, stable, and secure.

CCLA In The Community

Since we last checked in, Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida Executive Director Lisa G. Goldberg and Senior Unit Supervising Attorney Jeff Hittleman attended the Feed the Need Luncheon hosted by Goodman Jewish Family Services. We applaud GJFS for their dedication to helping our neighbors in need and to ensuring no one in our community has to wonder where their next meal will come from. We are proud of our ongoing partnership with GJFS for the Senior Housing Stability Project, helping seniors maintain their homes and age in place with dignity.

Our team attended the Caribbean Bar Association’s Annual Scholarship and Awards Gala on October 18, 2025! This inspiring evening celebrated excellence, leadership, and service within the legal community — and supported scholarships for future generations of diverse legal professionals. We’re proud to join in recognizing the incredible work of the Caribbean Bar Association and its continued commitment to justice, mentorship, and empowerment.

CCLA attorneys attended Noche Latina, hosted by the Broward County Bar Association. It was a wonderful evening celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and honoring the culture, achievements, and contributions of the Hispanic community to the legal profession. Events like these highlight the strength of connection, diversity, and collaboration within Broward County’s legal community.

CCLA, the Florida Health Justice Project (FHJP), and Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law came together for a in-person clinic and powerful roundtable discussion on public health benefits and the challenges facing our community. CCLA and FHJP work to ensure that vulnerable individuals and families have access to the support and legal protections they need to live with dignity and stability. Law students from NSU gained valuable insight into the importance of public interest law and its far-reaching impact. These conversations are opportunities to inspire future advocates and strengthen our collective commitment to justice, equity, and community well-being.

CCLA Supervising Attorney, Paul Yune presented at the BCBA and Broward County State Attorney’s Office (SAO) presentation of Breaking the Cycle: Legal Tools for Combating Domestic Violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event featured an outstanding panel of judges and advocates dedicated to protecting survivors and promoting justice; The Honorable Melinda Brown, The Honorable Michael Kaplan, The Honorable Stefanie Moon, ASA Stefanie Newman, SAO Special Victim Advocate Courtney May, and CCLA's Supervising Attorney Paul Yune.

To round out Domestic Violence Awareness Month, CCLA attorneys presented on a domestic violence awareness panel alongside fellow private attorneys and attorneys from the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office at NSU Shepard Broad College of Law for Strength in Purple Event. It was an inspiring evening of conversation, education, and empowerment — highlighting the importance of advocacy, community support, and standing together against domestic violence.

CCLA had a great time connecting at the Broward County Bar Association’s ADR, Trial Lawyers, and Young Lawyers Sections Joint Social Event. The strong turnout made it a perfect opportunity to share our mission, connect with colleagues, and meet new partners who are interested in helping our community. Many thanks to BCBA’s ADR, Trial Lawyers, and YLS Sections for hosting such a successful gathering.

Our team attended and tabled at Oriole Elementary’s Fall Resource Night, where we had the wonderful opportunity to speak directly with families and parents about the free legal services CCLA provides. It was a great experience to get out into the community, connect face-to-face with individuals, answer questions, and share information about the support available to them.

CCLA staff generously donated, collected, and delivered a large supply of non-perishable food to the LifeNet4Families Food Pantry. With many families experiencing uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits and struggling to stretch limited resources, we know how vital community support can be during times like these. We hope this contribution helps families in need and brings a little extra comfort to our neighbors as they navigate these challenges.

Two of our attorneys, DaNisa Holmes and Jesica Alexander, presented to the Caregiver Support Group at the Johnny L. Tigner Center in Deerfield Beach. The group-made up of dedicated individuals caring for senior family members and patients—engaged in a thoughtful discussion about CCLA’s services for caregivers, Advance Directives, and the broader range of legal assistance we offer the community. As we celebrate National Family Caregivers Month, we’re honored to recognize and support the compassion, strength, and dedication of caregivers who make a difference every day.

Attorneys from our Family Law and Victims of Crime Unit attended the Broward County Bar Association’s Family Law Nuts & Bolts training. Our team recognizes that learning is essential to the work we do. We’re proud to see our team strengthening their skills to better serve families in our community.

CCLA recently provided a presentation on the Broward Senior Eviction Prevention Program to the PONG Committee of Broward County’s Housing Options, Solutions, and Supports Division. This was a valuable opportunity to share information about the services available to help stabilize housing for seniors facing eviction, discuss community needs, and collaborate with partners dedicated to preventing homelessness among vulnerable older adults

CCLA assisted the Broward County Bar Association in packing donations to send to Jamaica for those impacted by Hurricane Melissa. A special thank you to BCBA for organizing this effort — your leadership and dedication make initiatives like this possible. Moments like these remind us of the power of compassion and community; when we come together, we create meaningful impact far beyond our borders. Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and supported families in need

CCLA staff are experts in their field and recognize the importance of being on the cutting edge of issues that impact our clients and community.

As an integral part of this community, we look forward to engaging with all community members and providers in the coming year. If you would like CCLA to attend an event, conduct an outreach, or you have a topic you'd like us to address in an episode of Legal Learning on CCLA's Facebook page and YouTube channel, please contact us at: CCLAInfo@legalaid.org.
