21st Sunday of Ordinary Time (A) | Aug 23, 2020
Congratulations! You've made it through your first week of classes! And what a week it's been. Our first "Mass on the Grass" last Sunday had about 50 students in attendance. It was so heart warming to see you all brave the sun and heat to give public witness to the importance of the Catholic faith on our campus. I've included a few photos of the Mass below, and you can see more in this album on our Facebook Page.

This week our small groups begin meeting. We encourage each of you to connect with a small group, especially now when we are not able to have our usual large group social activities. These small groups are student-led, scripture-focused, and open to any student interested in finding a supportive group of peers to discuss matters of faith, life, God, and what it all means. Groups meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with options to participate in person and online. See more information below, and contact one of the small group leaders to sign up.
This Sunday's gospel tells of Jesus giving the keys of the kingdom to St. Peter, establishing in him the office of the papacy. I reflect in this week's YouTube video about the very important role this office plays in maintaining Christian unity.

In Christ's Peace,
Deacon Matt
SUNDAY | Aug 23
  • CONFESSIONS | 3:00 PM
  • ROSARY | 3:30 PM
  • MASS | 4:00 PM

Sunday Masses this semester are celebrated at Hillside Grind on the lawn (or inside if raining). Social distancing and face coverings required. Mass will also be live streamed on our Facebook Page.

CREDO UPDATE: Our Credo discussions after Mass were scheduled to begin this Sunday, but we are pushing back the start of our discussion series to next week due to a death in Deacon Matt's family, to allow him to attend the Sunday evening visitation. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Deacon's mother-in-law, Marta.
Here's a tip!

Since we aren't having hymnals or missals in the pews this semester, download the iMissal app to your phone to follow along with the readings and prayers for Mass.
MONDAY | Aug 24
TUESDAY | Aug 25
WEDNESDAY | Aug 26

Join us for CCM Connect! each Wednesday night on our Facebook Page. This week's topic is The Four Temperaments - how knowing your natural temperament can help you grow in holiness.

Tune in after for a time of prayer and praise, also live streamed on Facebook.
THURSDAY | Aug 27
FRIDAY | Aug 28
  • MASS | 12:15 PM
  • CCM CLEAN UP | 1:00 PM
  • ROSARY for CAMPUS | 3:00 PM

We have weekday Mass in the chapel each Friday at 12:15 pm (seating limited to 12 people, face masks required). After Mass, grab a to-go lunch on campus and bring it back to CCM to enjoy. We'll spend the afternoon doing light yard work and cleaning indoors to help keep our center beautiful. At 3:00 pm we will stop our work and pray the rosary together for our ministry and for all the students, staff and faculty at WCU.
Get to Know our Pastor!
Fr. Paul Asoh, MSP, is a missionary priest from Nigeria recently assigned to St. Mary's this summer. He posted this introduction on the St. Mary's web site when he arrived, and wishes to share it with the students of Western whom he looks forward to getting to know better in the coming weeks and months.
Get to Know our Campus Minister!
Deacon Matt Newsome has been campus minister at WCU for twelve years (though this is his first year ministering during a pandemic!). Check out his bio on our web site, or better yet, spend some time with him in person. He's on campus five days a week and available to meet with students in person and online.
Thank you for your support!
