Nonopioid Alternatives Law Update
Florida Medical Association
During the 2020 Legislative Session, Florida lawmakers attempted to fix some of the problems associated with 2019 legislation (HB 451) regarding nonopioid alternatives for the treatment of pain. The result was HB 743, which was passed into law and takes effect July 1, 2020.

This bill requires physicians to:
  • Inform the patient of available nonopioid alternatives for the treatment of pain;
  • Discuss with the patient the advantages and disadvantages of the use of nonopioid alternatives;
  • Provide patients with a printed copy of the Florida DOH educational pamphlet on nonopioid alternatives; and
  • Document the nonopioid alternatives considered in the patient’s record.

Physicians will not have to provide this information when a patient is receiving care in a hospital critical care unit, the emergency department, or hospice.
