We hope to see you all at our Back-to-School Picnic on Wednesday, August 14 from 11:30-12:30. Bring a blanket and your picnic lunch - we'll mark out the field by grade level so kids and parents can connect again after the break.
 
The first day of school is Thursday, August 15 . School begins at 8:30 a.m . We will have flag salute on the blacktop of the elementary campus all together before heading to class that day. Adults are welcome to stay on campus during that time. During the year, we do all-school flag salute on Monday mornings on the blacktop (unless it's raining). Please join us when you're able to. It's a great time to hear announcements and connect with other parents. Take a look at the   CCDS website calendar for all the events happening at school throughout the year.
 
This year, our school-wide theme is Hand in Hand: Show Your Humanity . One thing that connects us all is human relations and how we move about the world treating each other with kindness and respect. I am looking forward to the inquiry and development of ideas around humanity for our students. We have always been a school that places a focus on social-emotional learning, which will pair nicely with the addition of this theme around humanity. 
 
We have some new staff members joining our team this year! Many were introduced during Fly-Up Day to your students. We have Nicole Hardoy in 3rd grade, Miranda Spallino and Alison Zuris in 4th grade, Jenna Sverchek as an Education Specialist on the K-5 campus, Tyson Anderson as an Education Specialist on the Middle School side, Clyde Kladt in 7th and 8th Social Science, and we'd like to extend a warm welcome to Renata Hamblet in 1st grade. Over the summer, Renee Dooly took an opportunity allowing her to work part-time, so we had an opening for a 1st grade teacher. We had many extraordinary applicants and are grateful to have Renata joining the team. I remember my own first days at CCDS ten years ago and know that our new teachers will be embraced into the CCDS family in a joyful and welcoming way. 
 
CCDS is in a Charter renewal cycle for the 2020-2025 school years. As a charter school, we have some flexibility in the ways we meet the needs of students. With that flexibility comes additional accountability in the form of renewal of our Charter every five years. We have submitted our petition to the CUSD Board of Education for approval and will be on a future agenda to discuss the Charter's approval. If you see the value in what we do here and would like to show your support by attending that meeting, please be on the lookout for additional details. The meeting will likely be in September or October. Thank you to everyone who worked on the Charter and supporting documents, and to our CCDS Board of Directors for their support of our school. 

The 2019-2020 school year looks to be one of joyful learning, opportunities to show our humanity, and chances to connect as a community. Thank you for choosing CCDS as the place where your student learns and grows. We cannot wait to welcome you all back at the picnic on August 14 and are excited for the first day of school on August 15!

Teacher Wishlists

Many of you have inquired about school supplies for the upcoming year. This year each teacher has an Amazon Wishlist on the CCDS website under About Us, and then Staff Directory. If you would like to purchase something on the list at another store, just send an email to the teacher to let them know. Of course students will have access to supplies regardless of whether or not their families have made a donation.

Friday, August 16 - Join PTP for the "Welcome Back Parents" Continental Breakfast from 8:30-9:30 a.m.  It will be under the big tree near the Main Office. Come introduce yourself! 

For your convenience, Blue Oak Mobile Live Scan Service will be on campus during  the Parent Breakfast. Cost is $67 with a $5 donation back to CCDS. Live Scans will be in the After School Room (located next to the main office). There will be another opportunity to complete this during Back-to-School Night. Live Scans are required to take part in any field trip.

IMPORTANT Reminder About Incoming 7th  grade TDAP Vaccines 
  • Adolescent whooping cough booster immunization (Tdap) is required of ALL 7th graders in California in order to START school, as well as being up-to-date with ALL MANDATORY VACCINES. 
  • Starting this school year, there are two (rather than one) doses of chickenpox (varicella) vaccine required at Kindergarten entry and 7th grade advancement.

To have medication in the office, please download the  Medical Authorization Form and have your doctor complete. It can be faxed to our office at 895-2646. Medicine (including over-the-counter) can only be administered with this completed form on file.
 

Welcoming the whole family, not just the new student, is a priority to us.  We know that coming to a new school can sometimes be overwhelming for everyone.  To make the experience easier, we are creating a New Family Mentoring Program to assist our new families' navigation of our school community. 

If you are a new family with questions or a returning family wanting to help others, please click here to fill out your information. Once we have received both veteran and new families that are interested, w e will match families with consideration to grades/ages, etc. to make a valuable experience for everyone.

Qualities required to be a Mentor Family:
  • Your family has been at CCDS for a few years
  • You're familiar but still remember those first year uncertainties
  • You're willing to share your knowledge and make new parents and their children feel welcome.

Back-to-School Night is a parent only event. Please line-up your babysitter! Please be considerate of our neighbors when parking and be prepared to walk a couple blocks during all-school events.

Volleyball
Volleyball season is coming! Please complete the Volleyball Interest Form if your student is planning to participate in try-outs.

Volleyball Open Gym
Join us at our open gyms for all interested 6th-8th graders (boys and girls) to learn rules, technique or just get warmed up for the upcoming season.

Volleyball Tryouts
Middle School Volleyball tryouts are Wednesday, August 14 and Thursday, August 15 from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. in the CCDS gym. This is a co-ed program, with two teams. One team consists of 6th & 7th graders while the other is 8th graders. If your child makes the team practices will be 3:15-5:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday, on the days there are no games. Most games will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. If you have any questions, This year's coaches are Chas Konopka and Pamela Wilson. Welcome Chas!

Bands and Choirs Begin August 26

Band classes will be directed by Teddy Greenfield!  He comes to the program with a knowledge of every band instrument, a love of music, and an enthusiasm for sharing it with our students!  He is also a gifted arranger and will often bring his own arrangements into rehearsals.  Welcome Teddy! Mrs. Greenfield and Mr. Teddy also hope to craft some arrangements for bands and choirs to perform together!

Mrs. Greenfield and Mr. Teddy will be available every day after school during the week of August 19-23 to help you sign up, answer any questions, and help interested beginning band students choose an instrument. Stop by the music room!


Starting August 27, the Band rehearsal schedules will be as follows:

  Beginning Band: Wednesdays and Fridays 2:55-3:55
 Concert Band: Wednesdays and Fridays 4-5
 Symphonic Band: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:55-4:15

All band classes are open to 5th grade and up.
All band rehearsals will be held in the music room.
Suggested donation for band: $50 per month

For interested beginning band students:
All band instruments will be out and available after school for students to try during the week of August 19-23.  If you need to come try instruments at another time, please contact us to make an appointment!



Starting August 26, the Choir rehearsal schedules will be as follows:

Concert Choir (5th-8th grades)
Mondays 3-4 in the music room
Wednesdays 3-4 in the Middle School Common Area
Friday mornings 7:40-8:20 in the music room

Suggested donation for Concert Choir: $50 per month

Chorus (beginning choir ~ 2nd grade and up)
Tuesday mornings 7:40-8:20 a.m. in the music room
Thursday afternoons 3-3:45 p.m. in the library

Suggested donation for Chorus: $30 per month

Welcome Back!  We will be at the Back-to-School Picnic on Wednesday August 14, to celebrate with popsicles! We would love to answer any questions you might have about PTP and how you can help out in the coming year. There are so many great ways to be involved with our school community, all ideas are welcomed. 

On Friday morning, August 16 from 7:45-9:30 a.m., we are excited to again host a Welcome Back Parent Breakfast after drop-off. We invite all parents, new and returning, to come and mingle, have a breakfast bite. It is a great time to ask PTP any questions or to share any ideas. See you at the big tree by the office! 

Following tradition, we will have our first all-school skate at Cal Skate Friday, August 23, after school from 3-5 p.m. This is a great way to end the first full week of school and celebrate with your friends! This is another opportunity to reconnect with CCDS families. Please make sure you join our Facebook group  Chico Country Day PTP to keep updated on PTP events!
