Greetings, Siblings in Christ,

We are firmly in the “the dog days” of summer: hot and sultry.

Apparently, this descriptive phrase derives from the time when the ancients in the northern hemisphere noticed that Sirius,

the “Dog Star,” rose in the sky at roughly the same time as the

sun during these steamy months.

Looks kind of like a dachshund to me. In any case, it is a time to slow down and yield to the heat’s invitation to take stock of what’s really important. What’s really worth my time and energy right now?

Last week I had the blessing of a quiet day at the SSJE monastery on Memorial Drive in Cambridge. A hot summer day is the perfect time for me to reset my spiritual bearings amidst the silence in that place, punctuated with worship with the Brothers there.

I pray that each of your summers has a place–physical, psychological, spiritual, wherever–for you to pass at least a few of these dog days with rest and refreshment with Jesus.

Steps Update

We are making significant progress. The steps project is nearing completion. We are bidding out the extension of the two central iron railings, so as to provide welcoming, extra support for those going up and down the stairs. Click here for more details on summer construction projects. Thank you for your support of these important improvements!

Summer Lemonade Hour Volunteers Needed

Please consider signing up to host Sunday Lemonade Hour during the summer months. The menu is simple: a baked good and cold drinks (iced tea, lemonade). A signup sheet is available in the UPH. Please reach out to Barbara Hurley or Phil Crider with any questions.

Psalm 23 Summer Challenge!

Keep an eye out for the Psalm 23 Summer Challenge materials that will invite your household to learn this Psalm, pray and create with it in different ways, explore supplementary materials, and more through June, July, and August. No matter where you are and what you're doing, you can take your Psalm 23 challenges with you!

Monthly Solar Panel Update

The solar system continues to generate savings for the Church and carbon-free energy for our power needs. The system generated about 5,529 kWh of electricity last month (July) and has saved the Church about $8,036 so far this year. Thank you Kevin Ruddy for monitoring!

Community Concerns Spotlight

Each year the Community Concerns Ministry of Christ Church is granted budgeted dollars to disburse to a number of needy local, national and international organizations. In 2026 more than 20 of these groups will be served with a total of $15,500. The Ministry continues to do its part to help alleviate hardship and provide for the health and dignity of all.

During the next several months we will offer the congregation quick updates on these organizations and the services they extend. Ministry members are Susan Barber, Harding Ounanian Jr, Christine Ruddy, and Donna Vello. New Members are always invited to join.

Fair Foods

Fair Foods began in 1988 when Dorchester resident Nancy Jamison noticed a truck full of carrots being driven to the dump. She told neighbors that perfectly good surplus food was being thrown away, so they rounded up a few trucks and began picking it up from several locations. There was enough free food available for everyone to share with families, friends and neighbors. Fair Foods was born.

For the past 36 years, Fair Foods has provided healthy produce to low-income families in Boston and the greater Boston area. Its unique $2 Bag Program goes beyond emergency hunger relief to help make a healthy diet affordable for those in the local communities.

With a network of trucks and volunteers, Fair Foods rescues as much as five million pounds of produce annually, distributing it to over eighty sites in Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. No matter how much it grows, Fair Foods still remains community-operated, staffed by a network of hundreds of volunteers.

Fair Foods seeks to inspire and motivate people to practice this philosophy of sharing. It strives to develop and coordinate programs which put into action the equitable distribution principles that Fair Foods represents. The vast amount of worthwhile resources that are regularly put in landfills, dumps, and into our ecosystem is staggering. The organization’s work focuses on the reduction of food waste that could otherwise be put to good use.

Fair Foods is above all a loving, compassionate, and humanitarian organization. It is a beacon of hope, encouraging people to believe in the good of humanity and to reject apathy. Fair Foods is a proactive organization that inspires people to help one another instead of fighting amongst or neglecting one another. Fair Foods has at its base of action: love and the best interests of furthering the development of a truly good society. To learn more, visit www.fairfoods.org.
