Our Pastoral Response Ministry begins our Tuesday meetings with the Collect of the Day from the previous Sunday. We reflect on how the prayer touches us, and where we experience God in it.This week, the Collect resonated particularly strongly with us:

Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer, p. 234)

I bet many of us are currently anxious about “earthly” things--a sick loved one, a struggling relationship, the toxic state of our civic and political culture, a looming government shut-down--something is causing us anxiety. I’m also betting that we yearn for security anchored in sturdier stuff, beyond our current state of affairs, something “heavenly.”

The prayer seems to posit a false disconnect between earthly and heavenly. Yet we know heaven is connected to earth–how else are we to experience God (that is heavenly things) except through our human experience, say, through the grace and kindness of another or the beauty and grandeur of creation? And, consummately, we know heaven and earth are joined in Jesus Christ.

Yet the prayer asks for a transcendent anchor—beyond the noise and churn, through the heartache and injustice. As Paul writes “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” And elsewhere, “Test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil.”

In an ever-changing world, may we hold fast to Christ, and walk in love with him, as he loves us, as well as our neighbor.

Faithfully,

Nick+

A Very Big “Thank You!”

I’d like to thank everyone who attended and/or supported our fundraiser concert for Ukraine this past Sunday. We had a wonderful crowd, it was a beautiful concert, and best of all, it was a highly successful fundraiser! My initial goal for the concert was to raise $1000, but with your help and incredible generosity, we blew that goal out of the water and raised nearly $1700. So

thank you again for making the start of our fall concert series a success, and I hope you will join us for the musical events coming up in the next few months. Next up: an organ concert on

Sunday, Oct. 26 at 3pm!

TerraCycle wants your empty Snack and Juice Pouches

At CCN, in partnership with the Episcopal Church’s ongoing commitment to stewardship of God’s creation, we are excited to share a recycling project focused on hard-to-recycle waste. Our first step is collecting all brands of plastic snack pouches—like those used for applesauce and baby food (including lids)—and plastic and aluminum juice pouches (including straws).

These items often end up in landfills, but through this initiative, they’ll be sent to TerraCycle, where they’ll be properly processed through a specialized recycling program.  You can drop off your empty pouches in the clearly labeled bins in UPH. We hope to include more recycling programs in the near future.
