• Extreme Heat Training – July 24 cohosted by Climate for Health and APHA: Climate for Health and APHA are partnering to offer “Extreme Heat & Health: Clinical and Public Health Strategies for Prevention and Action” as a live, virtual training on July 24 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm ET / 10:00 am - 1:00 pm PT.

• Air District Encourages You to be Wildfire Ready: It doesn’t take much. A spark from car chains hitting the roadway or even equipment like a lawnmower or edger hitting a rock or hard surface. A lighting strike from the clouds rolling by. One of these can ignite a tiny fire that can quickly morph into a roaring wildfire. When that happens, the smoke billowing from wildfires can have a tremendous impact on Valley residents, especially on young children who typically breathe faster and take in more air per minute than adults.

When wildfires impact Valley communities, the Valley Air District provides valuable, timely resources for residents. They include the following:

• EPA’s Fire and Smoke Map
• Year-round air quality info:
• Download the Valley Air app or visit the Real-time Air Advisory Network (RAAN) website
• Download EPA’s Air Now app or visit the AirNow website
• Clean Air Centers Map: A network of publicly accessible facilities for Valley residents who might not have access to clean air during wildfire events. Call ahead to verify hours of operation.

Remember, if you smell smoke and see ash, you are being impacted by poor air quality and should take steps to minimize exposure.

• Researchers at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, in collaboration with UC Merced, are conducting a remote study to better understand the daily experiences of LGBTQ2S+ individuals who are 18 years or older and currently smoke cigarettes as they work to quit smoking. They are seeking to engage transgender and non-binary residents in the region, and participation is entirely remote and confidential.
• Eligible participants may be compensated up to $200 for completing the study. Participation includes a brief screening survey and, if eligible, a 28-day smartphone-based research activity.
