Two weeks ago we reported on the City’s plans for bike lanes on Spruce and Pine Streets. Subsequently, City Council has passed a bill prohibiting vehicles from stopping in a bike lane.
Specifically, the bill seeks to “prohibit stopping, standing, or parking a vehicle in a bicycle lane and to increase monetary penalties for illegally stopping, standing, or parking a vehicle in a bicycle lane, all under certain terms and conditions."
The bill passed Council unanimously, which makes it veto-proof. Fines will be $125 in Center City and University City, and $75 elsewhere.

Through the Looking Glass – It’s Not What You’d Expect | |

What’s eight feet tall, shaped like an inverted flying saucer, and comes from another country? The answer is the newest “virtual portal” that just opened and has become an instant sensation/curiosity in LOVE Park.
Technically it’s an art installation, but it’s so much more than that. It’s an interactive, live window to other cities around the world through a giant round video screen that also includes a camera to beam the Philly scene right back to the “other side” somewhere else in the world.
Philadelphia’s portal connects to a new city every three minutes, rotating between Vilnius, Lithuania; Lublin, Poland; and Dublin, Ireland, according to a statement from Portals.org. Soon, new cities will be added to the list.

Taney Street Rename to Go Forward | |

Philadelphia City Council announced at a press conference that Taney Street in Philadelphia will soon be renamed “LeCount Street”, in honor of Caroline LeCount, the first Black woman to pass Philadelphia's teaching exam — and who some have called Philly's own Rosa Parks.
Taney Street was named for former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, who led the court for 28 years and authored the majority opinion in the 1857 decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford, which ruled that Dred Scott was not a citizen because he was Black.
The bill to rename the street should pass by the end of 2024, with the first LeCount Street signs going up in 2025.

Lucky us: Last month it was the Arts, (the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show), and now next month it’s Crafts, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Contemporary Craft Show at the PA Convention Center from November 15 through the 17th.
Celebrating its 48th year, the Craft Show is a one-of-a-kind event featuring countless one-of-a-kind works by artists from across the country. This year’s Show welcomes nearly 200 talented artists representing 13 diverse categories of art and design, plus 24 guest artists from Italy.

As if McGillin’s Olde Ale House itself isn’t enough, this venerable watering hole is kicking off the Christmas season early with the return of its Holiday Pop-Up Shoppe, offering the bar's merchandise less than a block away from the historic pub.
The store is now open at 1314 Sansom Street — at the corner of Juniper and Sansom — Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. After a successful debut last year, the pop-up opened a month earlier and is offering even more gifts and clothes than last year..

MUSICIAN-LED INITIATIVE “MUSIC FOR FOOD” PRESENTS CONCERT TO BENEFIT

On Monday, November 18, 2024 at 6:30 pm, the Curtis-based, remarkable Erinys Quartet will perform on behalf of the musician-led initiative, Music for Food, in a concert to benefit the life-changing work of The Sunday Love Project, whose founder and executive director, Margaux Murphy, received the prestigious Philadelphia Award (often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Philadelphia”). 100% of the concert proceeds will be given to The Sunday Love Project.
The concert begins at 6:30 pm. An informal reception with the musicians follows the concert.
