CCRA This Week: April 22, 2021 |

The System Worked, Part II
Back in early January we noted in this space that within hours of the Jan. 6 Capitol riots the results of the 2020 election were certified into law. Our conclusion then: The system worked.
So too, it appears, with the Derek Chauvin trial, where by all indications the accused was given a fair trial, and with it the opportunity to defend himself before a jury of his peers. The jury heard both sides, the jury deliberated, and the jury spoke. Again, the system worked.
Reasonable people can disagree about various aspects of the system, but twice already this year the system has done its job amidst considerable storm and stress. That’s worth noting, if not celebrating.
It’s also a reminder to the rest of us to remain involved as we inch our way toward a more perfect Union in this experiment in democracy. Local elections are just around the corner, and our elected leaders need us to keep them responsive, responsible and accountable.

Tonight: A Free Virtual Book Discussion |
To celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month, the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Jazz Project will host a virtual discussion of the book, Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of An American Original written by Robin D.G. Kelley.
Organizers of the event, Benjamin Remsen of the Free Library of Philadelphia and Homer Jackson of the Philadelphia Jazz Project will take audience members on an expedition through this fascinating book and the music of this American original: Thelonious Monk.

Schuylkill Banks Kayak Tours |
SRDC and Hidden River Outfitters are partnering to provide professionally guided kayak tours of the tidal river. Kayak tour participants leave from the Walnut Street Dock and paddle up to the Fairmount Water Works and back to the Walnut Street Dock. Tours include equipment rental, instructions on how to paddle and safely operate the kayak, and a little over an hour out on the water. Kayak tours are scheduled for select Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays June through September. The full schedule and ticket prices can be viewed here.

Ritz at The Bourse: The Sequel |
It looked like fade-to-black for good in January 2020 when the 5-theater film arthouse Ritz at the Bourse closed its doors after a 30-year run. But cavalry to the rescue, as the Philadelphia Film Society has announced plans to re-open the Bourse as the PFS Bourse Theater in June of this year.
Some details: 5 theaters, some $750,000 in renovations, 4K laser projector, Dolby 7.1 in all five theaters. More details in the PFS press release: PFS Bourse.

Bike trail update: Work begins on 7 new protected lanes |
The city is making progress on several bike paths. Paving is complete on a new portion of the Delaware River Trail, between Tasker and Washington in South Philly. On American Street, where the city's first raised lane had started crumbling due to parking, the PPA is issuing tickets. |
