Don’t Make a Bad Situation Worse
No one here is unfamiliar with the problems regarding trash pickup in the City. The situation is unhealthy, unattractive and frustrating. (Don’t get us started.)
Frustrations notwithstanding, however, there is something everyone can do to help. And that would be: Don’t put your trash out earlier in the day than is specified by the Streets Department regulation. Because when people do that, well, use your imagination. Pretty it ain’t.
So then: From Vine to Bainbridge and from the Schuylkill to the Delaware, do the right thing with putting out your trash and recycling:

October 1 thru March 31: Between 6pm the night before and 6am the day of pickup.

April 1 thru September 30: Between 8pm the night before and 6am the day of pickup.
It’s a good rule. Follow it. Don’t be part of the problem.

CCRA held its Zoning Committee on Tuesday, August 24. You can access the report below. The next Zoning Committee meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 7pm.

Office Closure - Summer Break part 2
In observance of the Labor Day holiday, and to give staff and board a break, CCRA is closed from Friday, August 27 through Monday September 6. The office will reopen on Tuesday, September 7.

Do you love trees? Train to be a PHS Tree Tender this fall! |
This virtual four-part program will teach any tree lover the basics such as identification, planting, tree biology and proper care. As a participant, you will join a network of over 5,500 PHS Tree Tenders and will be joining one of the nation’s oldest and most respected volunteer urban tree care programs. Become a neighborhood greening hero!

Don’t Look Now, But: Where Are the Lanternflies? |
This time last year lanternflies were nothing short of a plague. They were in your face and, in some regrettable moments, they were in your clothing. (Eew.) This year? It’s not your imagination. They’re barely here. Not to put a kinehora on it, but how did this happy circumstance come to pass?
Evidently it’s a bit of a mystery. It’s not really known for certain. Did predators step up? Maybe. Did soil-based fungi help? Possibly. Have they just moved on? Could be. For more on the bugging-out, go here.

Afghanistan: How to Help
Last week we noted the regrettable turn of events in Afghanistan and the heartbreak that ensued. Sadly, things remain painfully difficult there.
But there are numerous ways to effectively help. Two local organizations include the refugee settlement agency Nationalities Service Center (NSC), and HIAS Pennsylvania, which helps low-income immigrants build new lives in our community.

You’ll need proof of vax to get into the Kimmel |
When the Kimmel Center reopens next month, all guests will be required to provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination in order to gain entry. The mandate applies to all its venues, both on the main campus and away. The Kimmel will also enforce Philadelphia’s mask mandate throughout its locations. Closed throughout the pandemic, the Center is set to re-open Sept. 18. For details, go here.
