Board of Education Approves Apple Lease for New Devices

New Bern, NC- During the January 16, 2024, Board of Education Work Session the Board of Education approved a new 4-year lease with Apple for new devices for students in grades 6-12 and all staff in grades k-12. The new lease, in the amount of $4,422,194.18, will provide 8,080 iPads with Logitech Cases to include keyboard and trackpad, 808 10.2-inch 64GB WIFI iPads with cases, 1,000 Logitech Crayon for the iPad, 32 3-day sessions of professional learning, and Apple Care for the devices.

Craven County Schools is elated to continue the 1:1 educational device journey with Apple. iPads have been incredibly beneficial for students in the classroom. Here are just a few ways iPads have been a successful learning resource for our students:

·     Access to Information: With iPads, students have instant access to a vast amount of information. They can use educational apps, browse the internet, and access digital textbooks to enhance their learning experience. This allows them to quickly find answers to questions and explore a variety of resources.

·     Interactive Learning: iPads offer interactive learning experiences through educational apps and multimedia content. Students can engage with interactive simulations, videos, and learning resources that make learning more engaging and memorable. These interactive tools can help students grasp complex concepts and improve their understanding of the subjects they are studying.

·     Collaboration: iPads enable students to collaborate with their peers more easily. They can share documents, work on group projects, and communicate with each other using various collaborative tools and apps. This promotes teamwork, communication skills, and a sense of community among students.

·     Organization and Productivity: iPads can help students stay organized and manage their workload more efficiently. They can use productivity apps to create to-do lists, set reminders, and keep track of assignments and deadlines. This helps students develop important time management and organizational skills.

·     Personalized Learning: iPads allow for personalized learning experiences. Students can access content and resources at their own pace, review material as needed, and receive immediate feedback on their progress. This personalized approach helps cater to individual learning styles and allows students to take ownership of their education.

·     Creativity and Expression: iPads offer a wide range of creative tools and apps that allow students to express their ideas and thoughts in different formats. They can create multimedia presentations, videos, artwork, and music, fostering creativity and self-expression.

·     Accessibility: iPads provide accessibility features that can support students with learning disabilities or special needs. These features include text-to-speech, speech-to-text, magnification, and dictation tools, making it easier for students to access and engage with learning materials.

In summary, iPads can enhance learning in the classroom by providing access to information, offering interactive learning experiences, promoting collaboration, improving organization and productivity, enabling personalized learning, fostering creativity, and supporting students with diverse needs.

Craven County Schools appreciates the support of the Craven County Commissioners for making this learning partnership with Apple possible for our students and staff. All teachers will now have access to an iPad which will provide endless resources and instructional tools that will be paramount in enhancing learning in the classroom.

NC Teacher of the Year Finalists Announced

Nine North Carolina educators have been named regional Teachers of the Year in recognition of their outstanding leadership and excellence in teaching.

Since 2013, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction has been proud to partner with the Burroughs Wellcome Fund to honor North Carolina teachers. The state has recognized outstanding teachers through its Teacher of the Year program since 1970.

“These nine educators are just a sampling of the incredible talent we’re lucky to have in North Carolina public schools,” said State Superintendent Catherine Truitt. “They represent excellence across disciplines, from core subjects to career and technical education to the arts. I commend each of them for their dedication to getting students excited about learning, and I can’t wait to see what this cohort accomplishes together on behalf of students in the year ahead.”

The mission of the North Carolina Teacher of the Year Program is to promote the profession through advocacy and support while recognizing outstanding teaching professionals who are implementing best practices in classrooms across North Carolina.

On April 5, one of these excellent educators will be named the 2024 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year during an awards ceremony at The Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary. The event will be live-streamed on the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s social media platforms, including YouTube and Facebook.
