New Bern High School Career & College Fair Success

On Monday October 24th, New Bern High School hosted its annual Career and College Fair, connecting students with employers, colleges, and universities from across North Carolina and other nearby states.

From 8:00–10:15 a.m., students met with local and statewide employers to learn about career pathways and professional opportunities.

Then from 10:30–11:30 a.m., juniors and seniors spoke with college representatives to explore their next academic steps.

Students came prepared, dressed professionally, resumes in hand, and ready to network.

“Our students had the opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world possibilities,” said Dr. Darryl Thomas, Principal. “We’re thankful for our business and higher education partners who continue to support student success.”

A big thank-you to all the organizations, colleges, community partners, and the NBH staff who made today such a valuable experience for our students!

Bright Ideas Are Shining in Craven County

Congratulations to our incredible educators who were recently awarded nearly $4,000 in Bright Ideas Education Grants from Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative (CCEC) and the Carteret-Craven Electric Foundation!

These grants will help fund creative and engaging classroom projects that bring learning to life for more than 1,900 students across Craven County Public Schools in Havelock.

Since 1994, CCEC has contributed over $676,000 to local teachers through the Bright Ideas program, supporting innovation, creativity, and student success across all subject areas.

Craven County Schools Participate in Teen Driver Awareness Week with “Seat Belts Save Lives” Challenge

High schools in Eastern North Carolina are participating in Teen Driver Awareness Week, with a special emphasis on safe driving habits and the importance of seatbelt use through the Seat Belts Save Lives Challenge.

Last week’s campaign carries a deeply personal message, held in memory of Lawson Blevins, a West Craven High School senior who tragically lost his life earlier this year in a car accident. In his honor, students across the district are spreading awareness about the dangers young drivers face behind the wheel and the importance of making responsible choices.

Throughout the week, students were encouraged to sign a safety pledge committing to:

• Always wear their seat belts
• Avoid speeding
• Eliminate distractions such as cell phone use while driving

At New Bern High School and West Craven High, students have embraced the challenge with great enthusiasm. They each had a goal of reaching 500 signatures by the end of the week.

Lawson’s mother, Jamie Creech, expressed her gratitude and hope for the initiative, sharing:

“I am so thankful for the love and support that has been shown to me from the students and staff at NBHS and this community. Teen Safety Drivers Week holds a very special place in my heart, and I hope that this program will continue to flourish and spread awareness not only to teens but also to their families. This has shown me that one voice does matter and that my love for my son will forever continue through this.”

The Seat Belts Save Lives Challenge is part of the district’s ongoing commitment to student safety and awareness, empowering young drivers to make life-saving decisions every time they get behind the wheel.

Arthur W. Edwards Elementary Hosts Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Book Vending Machine

Arthur W. Edwards Elementary School celebrated the addition of a brand-new book vending machine with a special Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Friday, October 24th at 8:30 a.m.

This exciting new resource is designed to motivate and reward students for meeting their reading goals, while also promoting a lifelong love of books. Through this initiative, students can earn a token for a free book by completing one or both of their grade-level WIGs (Wildly Important Goals), a key part of the school’s focus on student achievement and personal growth.

The project was made possible through a grant secured by Heather Santos, School Media Coordinator, in partnership with Craven County Partners In Education, the education foundation that supports innovative learning opportunities across Craven County Schools.

“We’re thrilled to provide our students with a fun and meaningful way to celebrate their reading success,” said Melisa Thompson, principal of Arthur W. Edwards Elementary. “The book vending machine is more than just a reward, it’s an investment in building confident readers who take pride in their accomplishments.”

Craven Early College Unveils New

Grab-n-Go Breakfast Vending Machine for Students

On Monday, October 27, at 9:00 a.m., Craven Early College High School, in partnership with the Craven County Schools School Nutrition Department, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling a new Grab-n-Go Breakfast Vending Machine, a creative initiative designed to make nutritious breakfast options more accessible for students.

This innovative vending machine will offer a variety of healthy breakfast choices, including breakfast bento boxes and breakfast sandwiches, providing students with quick, balanced options to start their day.

Adding to the excitement, the vending machine will feature a custom wrap showcasing artwork created by two Craven Early College students. Congratulations to Esther Aye and Jaley Gwyn, these talented artists were recognized during the ceremony and presented with a cash prize for having their artwork selected to represent the school’s new breakfast program.

The unveiling was a surprise for students, and the event highlighted the district’s continued commitment to promoting student wellness and ensuring that every learner has access to healthy meals anytime, anywhere.

Craven County Schools celebrates this exciting addition to Craven Early College and the School Nutrition Department’s ongoing mission to support student health, engagement, and success.
