"Please help us congratulate Mr. Jermaine Smith on his new role with the school district. He was approved by the Board of Education during the Board Work Session on September 17th, 2024, as the Transportation Director, a position that became vacant when Mrs. Thomasine Hassell retired on August 30th, 2024.

Mr. Smith shares the following: "I was born and raised in Bridgeton, North Carolina, and I have proudly served Craven County Schools for 24 years. I began my career as a bus driver and substitute teacher, gaining experience at various schools, including Ben D. Quinn Elementary, New Bern High, Bangert Elementary, and West Craven High.

For the past eight years, I have worked as the Transportation Coordinator for Craven County Schools. I am a proud New Bern High School graduate who attended Craven Community College. I am currently pursuing my degree at Elizabeth City State University—VIKING Pride!

As Transportation Director, my goal is to ensure that our department provides safe and reliable transportation for all drivers and students in Craven County Schools. I look forward to continuing to serve our community!"

Congratulations, Mr. Smith. We look forward to working with you in your new role.

Please help us celebrate Mrs. Mary Ann Smith in her new role as EC Compliance Coordinator. Get to know Mrs. Smith as she shares the following:

"I grew up in Kinston and have always called southeastern North Carolina home. We moved to New Bern in 2007, where I taught at New Bern High School as an NC Extended Content Standards teacher. In 2011, I transitioned to the role of EC Program Specialist, serving in that capacity until August 2024. I hold a BSW from East Carolina University, a degree in Special Education from Elizabeth City State University, and a master’s in Executive Leadership Studies from Gardner-Webb University. Additionally, I have earned National Board Certification. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, and relaxing by the pool or at the beach. I am excited to serve students, families, and staff as the EC Compliance Coordinator."

Please help us congratulate Mrs. Brooke Oleneack on her new position as the EC Curriculum Coordinator. Mrs. Oleneack shares the following so you can get to know a little bit about her:

"I grew up in Michigan in a family of educators, I always had a passion for teaching. My journey led me to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Hawaii in 2007, where I discovered my true calling of working with exceptional children. After relocating to Craven County in 2012, I was able to serve students in elementary, middle, and high schools in Craven County.

Most recently, I have served as the Behavior Specialist and Aspire Coordinator, where I’ve had the opportunity to support both students and teachers. Outside of school, I enjoy traveling with my family and attending local theater productions. I am excited to continue making a positive impact in the lives of exceptional students and educators for Craven County Schools as the EC Curriculum Coordinator."
