September 25, 2023

Dear District 89 families,

It has been an amazing start to the school year in our district! This began on August 23 when I was able to welcome Glen Crest and then Westfield students when they walked in to the building on the first day of school. I was also able to visit Arbor View, Briar Glen, and Park View that day.

Since then, I’ve been able to meet with students and families at the Briar Glen Ice Cream Social, the Arbor View Back-To-School Bash, the Glen Crest BBQ, and the Park View Movie Night.

I’m so impressed by all that our staff and families do to build and strengthen the culture at their schools. I’m looking forward to many more great events ahead. If you see me at your school, please come up and say hi.

In our October newsletter, I will share some opportunities for families to provide feedback to me in a more informal way.

I hope your family has had a great start to the school year. If there is anything your student needs to make this year even better, don’t hesitate to reach out to our staff.

Sincerely,

Doug Eccarius

CCSD 89 Superintendent

Take a look at the changes from summer 2023 construction

Community Consolidated School District 89 would like to thank the community members for supporting construction projects at all five school buildings this summer. The district's buildings and grounds as well as custodial teams worked hard to make sure all schools were ready for the first day of school. This video will show a quick overview of some of the work in our schools.

District earns award for excellence in financial reporting

CCSD 89 has earned the Association of School Business Officials’ Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 23rd consecutive year. The award is only given to districts that have met or exceeded the ASBO’s high standards for financial reporting and accountability. The district’s finance department is led by Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Maureen Jones (left).

This recognition can help the district earn a better bond rating, which last year was upgraded to AA+. The new rating helped the district receive better rates on the bonds used to fund the community-approved construction projects and is expected to help in the upcoming bond sale as well. Read more: https://bit.ly/4581jBo

Families will receive emergency test call on October 6

CCSD 89 will be conducting a test of the district's emergency phone contact system on Friday, October 6. This is a Teacher Institute Day when students will not be in school. This test is designed to ensure that the district has accurate phone contacts for every student. This is the number that would be called in the event of an emergency.

On October 6, every guardian should receive a recorded voice message on the phone numbers registered with the district. There is no need to respond to this phone message. However, if you do not receive a call by 3 p.m. Friday, October 6, you need to contact your school secretary to ensure the school has your correct information.

FirstView app helps families keep up with bus travel

Many CCSD 89 families will now be able to track their student’s bus trips to and from school through a free busing app. Parents can download the FirstView app. The app can show an estimated number of minutes until the bus arrives at bus stops, and when buses arrive at school. All CCSD 89 schools will be closed for students on Friday, October 6, for an Institute Day. All CCSD 89 schools will be closed on Monday, October 9, for Columbus Day. School will resume on Tuesday, October 10, on a regular schedule.
