District 89 families:
I would like to thank the parents and community members who attended our December “Talking 89” listening sessions. These meetings were a great opportunity for me to connect with more families and hear directly from residents who care deeply about public education. In an upcoming newsletter, we will be sharing the dates and topics for future “Talking 89” sessions. I look forward to continuing this dialog with all of you.
If you were not able to attend the Talking 89 sessions, but there is some feedback you need to share, please feel free to email me or set up a time to talk.
The end of the calendar year can be an exciting time. Our schools’ hallways are filled with student work that highlights the childhood joy of building a snowman and spending time with family. There are weekly games where we get to watch students grow as athletes and as leaders. Our musicians have been sharing their hard work during the amazing winter concerts.
It is a time filled with lots of happiness – and lots of hustling around. I am so appreciative of all the time you put into making sure your students have what they need for school and extracurricular activities. None of this would be possible without your involvement and support.
I hope your family can find time to rest and relax with the people who are important to you over the next few weeks.
Have a wonderful winter break and a very happy new year!
Sincerely,
Doug Eccarius
CCSD 89 Superintendent

Families invited to webinar on gifted/advanced program evaluation
CCSD 89 is working with Northwestern University's Center for Talent Development to complete an evaluation of gifted and advanced programming. The current elementary program is called “Challenge” and is available for qualifying second- to fifth-grade grade students in language arts and humanities as well as science, technology, engineering, and math. In middle school, students may qualify for advanced literacy, math, or science.

Board approves contracts for summer 2024 construction |
The CCSD 89 Board of Education recently approved contracts that will define the next steps in the district’s construction work.
On Monday, December 11, the board approved multiple construction contracts, including heating/air conditioning, paving, concrete, plumbing, electrical, windows, doors, lighting, and ceilings. You can see more information about the contracts on the December 11 Board agenda: https://meetings.boardbook.org/Public/Agenda/1409?meeting=585757
These contracts represent the next steps in construction projects that were approved when more than 71 percent of residents supported a bond referendum in June 2022. During the summer of 2023, the district completed major work at all five schools, including new entrances at Arbor View, Briar Glen, and Glen Crest; new roofs at Arbor View, Glen Crest, and Westfield; new HVAC units at Arbor View, Glen Crest, Park View, and Westfield; new boilers at Arbor View and Glen Crest; a new wheelchair lift at Glen Crest and Arbor View; and more. (See a video summary of the 2023 summer work)
The approval of these contracts will allow the district to begin summer 2024 construction work the day after the 2023-24 school year ends. If no emergency days are used, the last day of the school year will be Wednesday, May 29. (The Board may approve a 2024-25 school year calendar at the meeting on January 22.)
Construction work for the summer of 2024 will include:
- Replacement of the heating and air conditioning system at Briar Glen
- Replacement of the Briar Glen ceilings, lighting, windows and doors
- Replacement of the parking lots at Arbor View and Glen Crest
- Seal coating of the parking lots at Park View and Westfield
- Renovation of the kitchen at Glen Crest

All schools will have anti-overdose medicine available
In compliance with a new Illinois law, anti-overdose medication will be available at all five CCSD 89 schools when students return from winter break. Illinois House Bill 3428 requires all school districts to have opioid antagonists that can be used in the event of an overdose. The law goes into effect on January 1.
CCSD 89 will have naloxone available at all five schools. It is liquid in a small bottle that can be sprayed in a person’s nostril if you believe they are having an overdose. Naloxone can temporarily reverse the effects of an overdose until medical help arrives.
In CCSD 89 schools, the naloxone will be stored with the defibrillators (AED machines) that are available at every school. Instructions on how to use the spray will also be stored in the same location. CCSD 89 staff members have also received training in opioid overdose reversal.
Administering naloxone to a person who has not taken an opioid medication will not injure or harm the person. The naloxone was made available to the district through a partnership with the DuPage County Health Department.
